Functionalized cotton charcoal/chitosan biomass-based hydrogel for capturing Pb2+, Cu2+and MB

Xiangbo Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, a porous multifunctional biomass carbon was prepared using an acid-base modification method, and a biochar acrylic-based hydrogel composite was successfully obtained with enhanced adsorption performance and stability. The adsorbent exhibited high efficiency adsorption capacity and selective adsorption for pollutants, followed a Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model during the adsorption process. XPS results confirmed that surface complexation and electrostatic attraction were the main mechanisms of the adsorption reaction, and the adsorbent showed consistent high adsorption capacity and metal ion recovery after multiple cycles.

Preparation and characterization of biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of Enteromorpha prolifera and corn straw and its potential as a soil amendment

Fengyue Suo et al.

Summary: This study prepared biochars from co-pyrolysis of Enteromorpha prolifera and corn straw at different ratios and found that CPECs showed potential as a soil amendment due to improved properties and positive effects on plant growth. A pot experiment demonstrated that CPECs significantly increased the biomass of cherry tomato plants by improving soil properties and increasing nutrient uptake. The results suggest the potential of developing designer biochars through co-pyrolysis to meet diverse soil requirements.

Synthesis of sodium lignosulfonate-guar gum composite hydrogel for the removal of Cu2+ and Co2+

Xin Li et al.

Summary: A composite material was prepared for adsorbing metal ions with abundant active functional groups and porous structure. The optimized product showed maximum ion adsorption capacities of 709 mg g(-1) for Cu2+ and 601 mg g(-1) for Co2+. XPS results confirmed successful adsorption of Cu2+ and Co2+, and surface complexation was proposed as the main mechanism. Recycling research demonstrated good chemical stability of the adsorbent.
