Synthesis of nickel-iron layered double hydroxide via topochemical approach: Enhanced surface charge density for rapid hexavalent chromium removal

Shuangqiu Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface charge density of NiFe LDH was tuned to improve the adsorption performance of Cr(VI) by nearly 150% through changing the iron valence. The increase in hydroxyl groups and charge density on the NiFe LDH surface was mainly attributed to the topological chemical transition. The adsorption of Cr(VI) onto Fe2+-NiFe LDH was highly pH-dependent and the main removal mechanisms involved electrostatic attraction, interlayer anion exchange, and adsorption-coupled reduction.

Rhombic TiO2 grown on g-C3N4 nanosheets towards fast charge transfer and enhanced Cr(VI) and NO removal

Hongyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper successfully created TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunctions through a mechanochemical pre-reaction and subsequent heat treatment process, achieving strong absorption of visible light. The formation of heterojunctions effectively adjusts the surface and electronic structures of the composite, resulting in a significant decrease in bandgap. In terms of photocatalytic performance, g-C3N4-based heterojunctions demonstrated excellent hydrogen generation and NO removal capabilities, while TiO2-based composites exhibited efficient photo reduction of Cr(VI).

Removal of hexavalent chromium via biochar-based adsorbents: State-of-the-art, challenges, and future perspectives

Rama Sinha et al.

Summary: This paper provides a review on the sources, chemical speciation, and toxicity of Cr(VI) ions, as well as the applications of biochar materials for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated matrices. The mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption onto biochar materials is discussed, and various models are used to understand the adsorption process. The practical applicability of biochar-based sorbents for Cr(VI) removal is also evaluated, and future directions for advanced biochar materials are proposed.

Interface Nanoarchitectonics of TiO2/g-C3N4 2D/2D Heterostructures for Enhanced Antibiotic Degradation and Cr(VI) Reduction

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: By a one-step solvothermal synthesis, two-dimensional/ two-dimensional heterostructures of TiO2/g-C3N4 nanosheets were prepared, which had a large interface area enabling easy migration of photogenerated carriers. As a result, the rate of photocatalytic reactions increased significantly. Under visible light irradiation, the TiO2/g-C3N4 heterostructures showed twice the degradation rate of antibiotics compared to g-C3N4, and their photoreduction performance of Cr(VI) was also higher than pure TiO2. The improved performance was attributed to the rich active sites brought by mixed-phase TiO2 nanosheets and the strong interaction between TiO2 and g-C3N4 at the interface.

Remediation of chromium-contaminated soil using calcined layered double hydroxides containing different divalent metals: Temperatures and mechanism

Jialing Zhao et al.

Summary: By calcining MgAl and CaAl at different temperatures, they can effectively immobilize Cr(VI) in the soil. Mg-500 degrees C and Ca-900 degrees C show good adsorption capacities, while the structures after high temperature treatment have poor adsorption performance for Cr(VI).

Effective removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) by sodium alginate intercalated MgAl-layered double hydroxide: adsorption properties and mechanistic studies

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel sodium alginate intercalated MgAl-LDH was synthesized for improved heavy metal adsorption efficiency. The SA-LDH exhibited better adsorption performance compared to pristine MgAl-LDH, with maximum adsorption capacities of 0.945 mmol/g for Cu(II), 1.176 mmol/g for Pb(II), and 0.850 mmol/g for Cd(II). Possible mechanisms of heavy metal removal by SA-LDH were analyzed via XPS, XRD, and FTIR, showing various pathways including bonding with surface functional groups, precipitation, isomorphic substitution, and chelation. This work provides an effective method for developing LDH-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Shiv Prasad et al.

Summary: Chromium is a critical trace element for human health, but contamination, particularly in the form of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], has increased in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities. Excessive exposure to chromium can lead to toxic health effects in humans and animals, while pollution negatively affects plant metabolic activities, reducing crop quality. Monitoring and implementing remediation technologies is essential to balance the environment and nature.

Facile preparation of layered double hydroxide (LDH)-alginate beads as sustainable system for the triggered release of diclofenac: Effect of pH and temperature on release rate

Gianluca Viscusi et al.

Summary: This paper explores the facile preparation of alginate beads encapsulating layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with diclofenac sodium for drug delivery systems. The study evaluates the effect of LDH carrier, release kinetics of diclofenac at different pH and temperatures, and the fabrication of a sustainable composite characterized by a triggered drug release rate. Empirical relationships correlating the drug diffusion as a function of temperature and pH were also extrapolated.
