Light-Controlled Nucleation and Shaping of Self-Assembling Nanocomposites

Marloes H. Bistervels et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates light-controlled nucleation and growth for self-assembling composites, showing precise control over the process by optimizing photogeneration, diffusion, reaction, and precipitation of the carbonate species. The ability to induce nucleation and sculpt the contours and features of the growing composite according to micrometer-defined light patterns opens up previously unimaginable opportunities for guiding self-assembly into functional materials.

Nanocrystallisation and self-assembly of biosourced ferulic acid derivative in polylactic acid elastomeric blends

Vikram Singh Raghuwanshi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the crystallisation of biosourced ferulic acid derivative BDF in a PLA matrix, resulting in transparent, elastic, and biodegradable thermoplastic blends. Experimental findings reveal the formation and self-assembly of BDF nanocrystals in the PLA network within a certain concentration range.

Chiral self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals is driven by crystallite bundles

Thomas G. Parton et al.

Summary: The transfer of chirality across length-scales is an intriguing and universal natural phenomenon, but connecting the properties of individual building blocks to the emergent features of their resulting large-scale structure remains a challenge. In this work, the authors investigate the origins of mesophase chirality in cellulose nanocrystal suspensions, whose self-assembly into chiral photonic films has attracted significant interest.

Silica nanoparticles enhance disease resistance in Arabidopsis plants

Mohamed El-Shetehy et al.

Summary: Silica nanoparticles have the potential to induce systemic acquired resistance in plants, entering leaves through stomata and involving the defense hormone salicylic acid. Compared to SiO2 NPs, the induction of systemic acquired resistance by Si(OH)(4) may cause stress.

Cellulose nanocrystal based composites: A review

Jamileh Shojaeiarani et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are renewable, biodegradable, nontoxic, and low-cost nanomaterials with desirable engineering properties such as large surface to volume ratio and high mechanical strength. However, their wide-scale application is limited by surface characteristics and processing challenges, leading to research on safer extraction methods, improved surface modification, and processing techniques.
