Evidence for the efficacy of the emetic PP796 in paraquat SL20 formulations - a narrative review of published and unpublished evidence

Summary: The emetic PP796 was added to paraquat formulations to induce early vomiting and prevent deaths due to unintentional poisoning. However, studies have shown that the selected concentration of PP796 in these formulations was based on inadequate evidence, with no significant clinical benefits or reduction in mortality rates observed. Subsequent research on formulations with higher emetic concentrations have shown potential for increased rates of early vomiting and modestly reduced mortality.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed non-suicidal poison exposures associated with the transfer of xenobiotics to secondary containers in the U.S. from 2007 to 2017. Although most cases did not exhibit significant toxicity, high rates of emergency department visits and potential for serious outcomes were observed.

Case fatality of agricultural pesticides after self-poisoning in Sri Lanka: a prospective cohort study

Summary: The study found that the case fatality rate of pesticide self-poisoning in rural areas of Sri Lanka is decreasing, mainly due to the banning of certain pesticides. There is also a slight decrease in case fatality rate for non-banned pesticides, indicating improvements in medical management.
