Surface Structure of Zirconia Implants: An Integrative Review Comparing Clinical Results with Preclinical and In Vitro Data

Nadja Rohr et al.

Summary: This review analyzed and correlated the findings of zirconia implants in clinical, preclinical, and in vitro cell studies in relation to surface structure. The results showed no correlation between surface structure and the observed effects in all three study types. Micro-structured surfaces showed lower mean bone loss in clinical studies, while smooth surfaces enhanced cell spreading and cytoskeletal formation in cell studies. Standardized procedures for human, animal, and in vitro studies are needed to further examine the results.

Is There a Better Biomaterial for Dental Implants than Titanium?-A Review and Meta-Study Analysis

Havard J. Haugen et al.

Summary: This article reviews studies on dental implant and abutment materials, focusing on their effects on peri-implant soft-tissue seal and peri-implantitis. The analysis included more than 30 studies and found no clear evidence that titanium is superior to other implant materials. Clinical evidence showed no difference in peri-implant bone stability among different implant materials. Meta-analyses indicated that zirconia implants had a statistically significant advantage over titanium in promoting a favorable response to alveolar bone.

Intraoral low-temperature degradation of monolithic zirconia dental prostheses: Results of a prospective clinical study with ex vivo monitoring

V Koenig et al.

Summary: The study investigated the intraoral development and kinetics of low-temperature degradation in second-generation 3Y-TZP monolithic prostheses, revealing non-uniform tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation with localized clusters after two years. Tribological stress in occlusal areas induced an underestimation of the aging process, while glazing did not protect against LTD. Further research is needed to understand the clinical impact of LTD in dental prostheses.

Mechanical Stability of Restorations Supported by Titanium Base, Zirconia, and Polyetherketoneketone Abutments on One- and Two-Piece Zirconia Implants

Josef Cantarella et al.

Summary: The zirconia one- and two-piece implants showed high survival rates after aging, but technical complications were common. New prosthetic solutions, such as titanium bases or polyetherketoneketone abutments, may provide a comparable treatment option for restoring two-piece zirconia implants.

Summary: The artificial aging of zirconia implants did not significantly affect their transformation propagation and fracture resistance. However, two-piece zirconia implants were found to be weaker than one-piece implants.
