Dynamical and thermodynamical aspects of precipitation events over India

Amita Kumari et al.

Summary: This study examines different precipitation events in India during the summer monsoon season from 1951 to 2015. The results show a decreasing trend in light rain events and moderate rain events, while heavy rain events and very heavy rain events have increased. These changes are attributed to both thermodynamical and dynamical conditions.

Summer-Winter Contrast in the Response of Precipitation Extremes to Climate Change Over Northern Hemisphere Land

Andrew I. L. Williams et al.

Summary: Climate models project distinct seasonality in future changes of extreme precipitation. The difference between summer and winter responses in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere can be explained by negative and positive dynamic contributions, as well as an anomalously strong thermodynamic contribution. The weakened ascent and decreased near-surface relative humidity in northern summer contribute to the weaker summer response.

Rainfall extremes on the rise: Observations during 1951-2020 and bias-corrected CMIP6 projections for near- and late 21st century over Indian landmass

Upal Saha et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of heavy, very heavy, and extremely heavy rainfall patterns and trends during the last seven decades (1951 to 2020) of monsoon months in India. It also projects these extreme rainfall events in the near- and late-21st century using bias-corrected climate models. The study identifies susceptible regions and suggests causal theories for the increase in monsoon rainfall extremes.

Scaling of precipitation extremes with temperature in China's mainland: Evaluation of satellite precipitation data

Seyed-Mohammad Hosseini-Moghari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of daily and 30-minute precipitation extremes to temperature variables across different climate zones in China. The results show a mix of positive and negative scaling factors for extreme daily precipitation with surface air temperature (SAT), with peak structures observed at higher temperatures. Comparisons between different temperature ranges reveal that a single scaling rate is not applicable for the entire temperature range. The scaling factors based on the temperature range before the peak structure exhibit better agreement with the Clausius-Clapeyron scaling, except for the tropical region. Daily scaling factors based on IMERG data are generally comparable to CN05.1 results, with discrepancies mainly in tropical and plateau climates. However, the 30-minute precipitation extremes in IMERG data do not increase as expected with rising temperatures, indicating the need for another precipitation dataset for scaling at this timescale, at least for China's mainland.

Understanding the sensitivity of hourly precipitation extremes to the warming climate over Eastern China

Danqing Huang et al.

Summary: The study in eastern China reveals that hourly precipitation extremes intensity increases with dew-point temperature, following a specific scaling rate. However, a negative scaling phenomenon occurs when the dew-point temperature exceeds 22 degrees Celsius, especially in southern China.

Intriguing aspects of rainfall initiation over rainshadow region during boreal summer monsoon

T. S. Mohan et al.

Summary: This novel study explains a plausible physical mechanism for rainfall initiation over the southeast peninsular India during the southwest monsoon season, and elucidates the contrasting rainfall patterns between the rain shadow region and central India through the response of the maritime continent. The study shows that the maritime continent is a prominent source for the initiation of wet spells over the rain shadow region, with a lead time of 5-7 days, and the evolution of convective anomalies resembles a classical Gill-type response. The combined effect of large-scale circulation and moisture anomalies over the maritime continent contributes to positive rainfall anomalies over the rain shadow region.

Consistent Large-Scale Response of Hourly Extreme Precipitation to Temperature Variation Over Land

Haider Ali et al.

Summary: The study found that hourly precipitation extremes tend to increase with temperature at rates higher than expected from the Clausius-Clapeyron relationship, with different regions showing varying levels of scaling and Europe having higher scaling rates. Additionally, hourly scaling consistently exceeds scaling for daily extreme precipitation.

Relationship of extreme precipitation, surface air temperature, and dew point temperature across the Tibetan Plateau

Zhiwei Yong et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there is a significant relationship between extreme precipitation and surface air temperature and dewpoint temperature on the Tibetan Plateau, with varying trends across different seasons and meteorological stations. Dewpoint temperature shows a stronger scaling relationship with extreme precipitation compared to surface air temperature, emphasizing the importance of considering seasonal variations and atmospheric humidity in future research.

Investigating the impact of cloud-radiative feedbacks on tropical precipitation extremes

Brian Medeiros et al.

Summary: The study reveals that extreme precipitation over tropical oceans is strengthened through a positive feedback with cloud-radiative effects, and the lack of this feedback leads to a decrease in extreme precipitation. This highlights the importance of accurately predicting cloud structure and properties, as well as capturing the essence of organized convection in climate models in order to represent extreme rainfall accurately.

Summer and winter precipitation in East Asia scale with global warming at different rates

Wengui Liang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the relationship between percentage change in precipitation and surface temperature change under global warming in East Asia. It shows that the scaling of precipitation with temperature is different in summer and winter, which can be attributed to the robust climate changes of moisture gradient, weakening westerly jets, and increasing hydrological amplitude of atmospheric eddies.
