China's pathways to peak carbon emissions: New insights from various industrial sectors

Kai Fang et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential peaking pathways of emissions in China's diverse industrial sectors by analyzing the emissions data from the past 23 years. The findings suggest that most sectors are expected to reach their peak emissions before 2040, with Agriculture, Building, Manufacturing, Others, and Transportation sectors likely to peak before 2030. These insights can be valuable for other countries in setting emission reduction targets.

Recovering phosphorous from biogas fermentation residues indicates promising economic results

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: The economics of producing energy-valuable gases through fermenting phytomass is threatened by the costs associated with waste management of highly diluted fermentation residues. The traditional practice of using the solid fraction of the residues for energy purposes leads to nutrient loss and farmers have realized that the organic matter in the residues has little agronomic value. For the first time, it is proposed to activate the charred residues and use the resulting sorbent to capture phosphorus from the liquid fraction, showing promising results for plant nutrition and soil improvement.

Economic effects of command-and-control abatement policies under China's 2030 carbon emission goal

Wei-Yew Chang et al.

Summary: China has committed to reducing its national carbon emission intensity by 65% by 2030 compared with the level in 2005. This study evaluates different carbon abatement scenarios and finds that implementing carbon reduction policies only for high emission sectors is more cost-effective and economically efficient.

Techno-economic analysis reveals the untapped potential of wood biochar

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: Infested wood can be processed into wood biochar via mobile pyrolysis units, which is a good option for fire prevention and has advantages in increasing plant-available water content in soil and recycling nutrients. Wood biochar can promote soil microbial communities and has positive effects on soil fertility. With increasing damage to forest cover due to climate change, wood biochar represents untapped potential in soil, nutrient, and energy management.

Can China decarbonize its electricity sector?

E. Demetriou et al.

Summary: China, the world's most populous country, is also the top emitter of CO2, with power generation being the main culprit. A projection of future electricity production in China between 2017 and 2050 shows that renewables alone are unable to meet electricity demand without fossil fuel supplementation. Only the Coal Free (CFr) and Goals scenarios are able to fulfill China's COP21 targets.

Life cycle assessment of CO2 emission reduction potential of carbon capture and utilization for liquid fuel and power cogeneration

Yangdong He et al.

Summary: This paper explores the environmental benefits of CO2 utilization through the reverse water gas shift into syngas for the production of liquid fuel and power. Compared with conventional NGCC and GTL standalone production systems, this system achieves an energy savings of 18.19% and a life-cycle carbon emission reduction rate of 46.87% at the same outputs.

Long-term transition of China's power sector under carbon neutrality target and water withdrawal constraint

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Given the dual challenges of deep carbon mitigation and water resources conservation in China's power sector, the transition pathway towards carbon neutrality by 2050 will require a shift towards low-cost renewables, reduced reliance on coal-CCS power generation, and strategic reallocation of power capacities. Rapid cost declines in renewables could lead to significant reductions in coal power generation with CCS and greater integration of solar photovoltaic and wind energy, with potential co-benefits of water conservation.

Decomposition of carbon emission and its decoupling analysis and prediction with economic development: A case study of industrial sectors in Henan Province

Jia Dong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the decoupling relationship between carbon emissions and economic development in 12 major industrial sectors in Henan Province. The findings showed that the restraining effects of energy structure, energy intensity, and industrial structure are increasing, and the decoupling index between carbon emissions and economic development in these sectors is decreasing. By 2035, some sectors are expected to achieve carbon neutralization, indicating an overall significant decoupling effect.

An overview of the inequality in China's carbon intensity 1997-2016: a Theil index decomposition analysis

Qi Tian et al.

Summary: Despite an overall decrease in CO2 emissions intensity in China from 2009 to 2016, there was a significant variation in intensity among provinces. Industry, construction, and coal sectors were the main contributors to the carbon intensity inequality, with intra-regional inequality playing a major role. Energy intensity disparity emerged as the driving factor behind the carbon intensity inequality, highlighting the impact of energy and economic structural transformation.
