Malaise and remedy of binary boson-star initial data

Thomas Helfer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the head-on collisions of boson stars through numerical simulations and explores the quality of binary initial data obtained from the superposition of single-star spacetimes. The results show that plain superposition of individual boosted boson-star spacetimes can lead to significant unphysical artefacts. A modification of the initial data proposed by Helfer et al in 2019 is effective in overcoming these difficulties for equal-mass binaries. Furthermore, the vulnerability observed in this study may also be present in other exotic compact systems.

Primordial black hole formation with full numerical relativity

Eloy de Jong et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation of black holes from subhorizon and superhorizon perturbations in a matter dominated universe is investigated using numerical relativity simulations. Two primary mechanisms of formation are identified, depending on the initial perturbation's mass and geometry. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the formation mechanisms of black holes.

Gravitational dynamics in Higgs inflation: Preinflation and preheating with an auxiliary field

Cristian Joana

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of both the preinflationary and preheating epochs in a model consisting of a Higgs inflaton and an additional auxiliary field in full General Relativity. The presence of the auxiliary field allows for successful energy transfer from the inflaton condensate to particle excitations in both fields through parametric-type resonances. The interaction strengths of the fields determine the formation of structures, including large under/overdensities and possibly compact objects.

Gravitational waves from fully general relativistic oscillon preheating

Xiao-Xiao Kou et al.

Summary: This study examines the gravitational-wave production during the preheating period after inflation, focusing on oscillons. The simulations considering general relativity reveal that the gravitational-wave spectra obtained from the perturbative approach are fairly accurate, except for cases where oscillon formation induces strong gravitational effects. The choice of gauge plays an important role in reducing the contributions of gauge modes to the gravitational-wave spectrum.

Fast hyperbolic relaxation elliptic solver for numerical relativity: Conformally flat, binary puncture initial data

Thiago Assumpcao et al.

Summary: NRPyElliptic is an elliptic solver built within the NRPy+ framework for numerical relativity. Unlike other solvers, it employs a hyperbolic relaxation scheme, making it easier to tweak and extend. It accelerates the relaxation waves and is much faster than the constant wave speed approach. Although slower in setting up initial data, it is very fast in full simulations.

Oscillon preheating in full general relativity

Xiao-Xiao Kou et al.

Summary: Investigated the oscillon preheating scenario in full general relativity, and found that general-relativistic corrections can lead to the production of more and denser oscillons, potentially collapsing them into black holes in certain parameter regions.

Dynamical attractors in contracting spacetimes dominated by kinetically coupled scalar fields

Anna Ijjas et al.

Summary: The study presents non-perturbative numerical relativity simulations of two scalar fields coupled through a non-linear model-type kinetic interaction, showing that the non-linear evolution tends towards a homogeneous, isotropic, and flat FRW geometry for various initial conditions. However, the kinetic coupling causes the evolution to deviate towards a novel Kasner-like stationary point, occurring on time scales that are too long to be observationally relevant.

The effects of multiple modes and reduced symmetry on the rapidity and robustness of slow contraction

Anna Ijjas et al.

Summary: It is demonstrated that the rapidity and robustness of slow contraction in homogenizing and flattening the universe are generally enhanced when initial variations are along two spatial directions, include multiple modes, and have reduced symmetry. Particularly significant are shear effects that only become possible when variations are allowed along two or more spatial dimensions. Based on numerical results, it is conjectured that this counterintuitive enhancement occurs because more degrees of freedom are activated, driving spacetime away from an unstable Kasner fixed point towards the stable Friedmann-Robertson-Walker fixed point.

Inhomogeneous preinflation across Hubble scales in full general relativity

Cristian Joana et al.

Summary: The study suggests that Starobinsky and Higgs inflation are robust in the face of inhomogeneous initial conditions. Analysis shows that Hubble-sized fluctuations can lead to the formation of primordial black holes, which are diluted by inflation. The research also indicates that at large field values, the dynamics before inflation are minimally influenced by the field potential.
