A Ten-Year Perspective on Twist-Bend Nematic Materials

Richard J. Mandle

Summary: The discovery of the twist-bend nematic phase (N-TB) has significant implications in the field of liquid crystals, providing a fresh impetus to the design and characterization of dimeric and oligomeric liquid crystalline materials. This review highlights the developments in this area, focusing on how molecular features relate to the incidence of the N-TB phase.

Understanding the remarkable difference in liquid crystal behaviour between secondary and tertiary amides: the synthesis and characterisation of new benzanilide-based liquid crystal dimers

Grant J. Strachan et al.

Summary: A variety of liquid crystal dimers containing secondary or tertiary (N-methyl) benzanilide-based mesogenic groups have been synthesised and characterised. While secondary amides all form nematic phases, the first example of an amide showing the twist-bend nematic (N-TB) phase has been presented. Interestingly, only two of the corresponding N-methylated dimers formed nematic phases, with significantly reduced transition temperatures. Various experiments revealed that methylation caused a change in the preferred conformation of the benzanilide core, resulting in a dramatic difference in liquid crystalline behaviour between secondary and tertiary amide-based materials.
