Achieving partial nitrification, enhanced biological phosphorus removal and in-situ fermentation (PNPRF) in continuous-flow system and mechanism analysis at transcriptional level

Zhiwei Fan et al.

Summary: A novel process was developed to achieve partial nitrification, enhanced biological phosphorus removal, and in-situ fermentation in a continuous-flow system dominated by Tetrasphaera treating real domestic wastewater. The process showed excellent performance in nitrite accumulation and phosphorus removal, while significantly reducing sludge discharge.

Increasing the energy production in an urban wastewater treatment plant using a high-rate activated sludge: Pilot plant demonstration and energy balance

Julian Carrera et al.

Summary: The potential of high-rate activated sludge (HRAS) reactors for COD removal in urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) was investigated. A pilot plant treating the effluent of a full-scale WWTP was studied for one year. The study found that HRAS performed better at higher sludge retention time (SRT) but experienced higher loss of organic matter at lower SRT. Coupling HRAS with autotrophic biological nitrogen removal (BNR) significantly improved energy generation.

Research advances of the phosphorus-accumulating organisms of Candidatus Accumulibacter, Dechloromonas and Tetrasphaera: Metabolic mechanisms, applications and influencing factors

Weihua Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the metabolic mechanisms, process applications, community abundance, and influencing factors of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) in wastewater treatment. It identifies novel PAOs, such as Dechloromonas and Tetrasphaera, which can remove phosphorus through different metabolic pathways. Dechloromonas can achieve simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an anoxic environment, reducing carbon source requirements and energy consumption.

Understanding microbial shift of Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal process (EBPR) under different Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentrations and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRTs)

Parnian Izadi et al.

Summary: The study found that dissolved oxygen levels greatly influence phosphorus removal performance, with high removal achieved at lower dissolved oxygen levels. Additionally, controlled aeration at low dissolved oxygen concentrations provided a selective advantage for phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) over glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) in microbial competition.

Nitrite and nitrate inhibition thresholds for a glutamate-fed bio-P sludge

Natalia Rey-Martinez et al.

Summary: Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is an efficient and sustainable technology used for removing phosphorus from wastewater. One common cause of EBPR deterioration in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is the presence of nitrate/nitrite or oxygen in the anaerobic reactor. Studies have shown that a microbial community developed using glutamate as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen exhibited high denitrifying PAO activity, with 56% of phosphorus uptake under anoxic conditions. This mixed culture also demonstrated the ability to use nitrite and nitrate as electron acceptors for phosphorus uptake, with a maximum FNA concentration of 1.8 mu g HNO2-N.L-1 for P-uptake. Despite showing net P-removal under permanent aerobic conditions, this microbial culture was more sensitive to FNA and permanent aerobic conditions compared to Ca. Accumulibacter-enriched sludge.

Summary: This study found that coupling simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification (SPND) with biological phosphorus removal in continuous-flow intermittently-aerated moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) fed with different carbon sources, i.e. ethanol and acetate, can achieve high removal efficiencies of DOC, TIN and P-PO43? under specific operating conditions.

Recent advances in understanding the ecophysiology of enhanced biological phosphorus removal

Samarpita Roy et al.

Summary: Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is an efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable method for removing excess phosphorus from wastewater. Polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) exhibit unique physiology by alternating between anaerobic conditions for carbon uptake and aerobic or anoxic conditions for phosphorus uptake, influencing microbial community interactions and overall phosphorus removal efficiency.
