Evaluation of the Bioelectrochemical Approach and Different Electron Donors for Biological Trichloroethylene Reductive Dechlorination

Edoardo Dell'Armi et al.

Summary: Based on the study, it can be concluded that the bioelectrochemical system using fermentable organic substrates as electron donors shows higher activity and efficiency in removing trichloroethylene pollution, compared to directly using molecular hydrogen as an electron donor. Additionally, the bioelectrochemical system achieves higher efficiency compared to the use of fermentable substrates and other chemicals.

Assessment of chlorinated ethenes degradation after field scale injection of activated carbon and bioamendments: Application of isotopic and microbial analyses

Cecilie B. Ottosen et al.

Summary: The study applied an integrated approach to assess in situ biodegradation of TCE contamination enhanced by liquid activated carbon and bioamendments. Dehalococcoides abundances facilitated identification of critical zones with insufficient degradation and provided possible explanations. The combination of isotopic and microbial techniques with distribution and transport information improved understanding of the biodegradation process.

Discovering the potential of an nZVI-biochar composite as a material for the nanobioremediation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater: Degradation efficiency and effect on resident microorganisms

Jaroslav Semerad et al.

Summary: The study investigated the remediation of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater using biochar-based composites containing nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI/BC) and natural resident microbes, supported by whey addition. The materials were able to decrease the original TCE concentration by 99% in 30 days, with biotic and abiotic transformation mechanisms involved in the process. The addition of whey increased bacterial biomass in the groundwater samples, aiding in the transformation of CEs and formation of less chlorinated products, demonstrating the potential and environmental safety of this nanobioremediation approach.
