Performance and mechanisms of microwave-assisted zerovalent iron/pyrite for advance remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil

Qi Li et al.

Summary: A novel approach combining microwave irradiation with zerovalent iron/pyrite (FeS2/ZVI) was developed for the efficient remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The results showed that microwave irradiation-assisted FeS2/ZVI achieved rapid and efficient removal of Cr(VI) from the soil, with a 99.9% removal rate within 10 minutes, and a decrease in Cr(VI) concentration from 3900.8 to 2.38 mg kg(-1). The study also demonstrated that microwave irradiation promoted the transformation of reduced Cr(III) into stable FeCr2O4 mineral, and the remediated soil exhibited excellent long-term stability.

Fe/Mn- and P-modified drinking water treatment residuals reduced Cu and Pb phytoavailability and uptake in a mining soil

Quan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that modified aluminum rich drinking water treatment residuals (Al-WTR) significantly reduced the uptake of toxic elements like copper and lead by plants in mining soil, indicating the potential for remediation of contaminated soils. The modification of raw Al-WTR increased its immobilization efficiency by increasing pH, specific surface area, and active functional groups, showing promise for field scale applications.

Characteristics, kinetics, thermodynamics and long-term effects of zerovalent iron/pyrite in remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil

Xiaobo Min et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the remediation property of ZVI/FeS2 for Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, showing that it had high reduction activity even under alkaline conditions and good self-regulating alkaline ability. The reduction process followed Langmuir-Hinshelwood first-order kinetics and had a low activation energy, indicating ease of reduction of Cr(VI).

Reduction of nitrate using biochar synthesized by Co-Pyrolyzing sawdust and iron oxide*

Eun-Yeong Han et al.

Summary: The study found that using ZVI-containing biochar can effectively reduce nitrate contamination in groundwater, however, the ammonia formed during the reduction process remains in the aqueous phase, leading to no overall decrease in total nitrogen. Acid-washed zeolite can be used to adsorb the remaining ammonium and maintain an acidic pH for further nitrate reduction.

In-situ synthesized iron-based bimetal promotes efficient removal of Cr(VI) in by zero-valent iron-loaded hydroxyapatite

Weichun Yang et al.

Summary: An innovative strategy of in-situ synthesized iron-based bimetal was developed to activate passivated ZVI, resulting in a significantly decreased activation energy for Cr(VI) reduction and a much higher removal efficiency. The strategy also achieved synchronous removal of Cr(VI) and Cu2+, providing a novel pattern for remediation of combined contaminants.
