Advancement and role of abiotic stresses in microalgae biorefinery with a focus on lipid production

Farhana Bibi et al.

Summary: Microalgae have been identified as a promising alternative feedstock for carbon-neutral biofuel production. This study aims to explore the effects of various abiotic stresses on microalgal biofuel production and review strategies to induce lipid production in microalgae. The manipulation of abiotic growth factors has been shown to facilitate high lipid and biomass accumulation in microalgae cultivation. The commercialization of algae-based biofuels through cost-effective and multi-product generation routes remains valid in the context of global decarbonization movement.

Mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae to enhance the biomass and lipid production with synergistic effect of red light and phytohormone IAA

Wenjuan Chang et al.

Summary: Microalgal cultivation is challenging in commercial application due to the small size and low density of microalgae. This study investigated the synergistic effect of phytohormones and light spectra on the growth and lipid production of Chlorella vulgaris. Optimal carbon and nitrogen concentrations, as well as the optimum dosage of the phytohormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), were evaluated under mixotrophic cultivation. The results showed that under the optimum IAA treatment and irradiation with red light, the highest biomass, lipid content, and lipid productivity were achieved. These findings provide new insights for highly efficient microalgal cultivation.

Summary: Microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems show promise in addressing climate change and wastewater treatment. The growth of microalgae in wastewater provides feedstock for renewable energy, while the treated water can be recycled to reduce costs. The study found that moderate turbulent intensities and mixed phytohormones created optimal conditions for nutrient removal and recycling performance, leading to increased biomass concentration and lipid yield.

Metagenomics and network analysis elucidating the coordination between fermentative bacteria and microalgae in a novel bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR) for mariculture wastewater treatment

Yedong Gao et al.

Summary: A novel bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR) was investigated for efficient treatment of mariculture wastewater. The BACR integrated acidogenic fermentation and microalgae cultivation, and successfully alleviated the pH drop and feedback inhibition of fermentation. The BACR achieved effective removal of pollutants and enrichment of fermentative bacteria and functional genes, leading to enhanced fatty acid production. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated the coordination between fermentative bacteria and microalgae in the BACR.

iTRAQ-based proteome profiling revealed the carbon metabolism regulation for mariculture wastewater treatment with Bacterial-Algal Coupling Technology

Pengtao Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, acidogenic fermentation effluents with different carbon source compositions were used for microalgae cultivation to enhance biomass production and nutrient removal. The results showed that propionate-type and butyrate-type fermentation effluents had higher efficiency in biomass accumulation and ammonia assimilation compared to ethanol-type effluent. Lipid accumulation in microalgae was enhanced with ethanol-type effluent, while propionate-type and butyrate-type fermentation effluents had positive effects on carbohydrate production and microalgal growth. Furthermore, increasing the inorganic carbon/organic carbon ratio improved the expression of key enzymes related to photosynthetic system and promoted chlorophyll production in microalgal cells.

Cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa with different phosphorus forms under photoautotrophic and mixotrophic modes: Biochemical component synthesis and phosphorus bioavailability appraisement

Ke Miao et al.

Summary: The study found that Chlorella pyrenoidosa can utilize different forms of phosphorus to sustain its growth and affect the synthesis of biochemical components. In mixotrophic cultivation, phosphorus is mainly stored in intracellular phosphorus pools, while in photoautotrophic cultivation, excess phosphorus is quickly absorbed and released. G-6-P enhances AKP activity and promotes organic phosphorus hydrolysis.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using acidogenic liquid as a culture medium for Chlorella vulgaris cultivation resulted in higher biomass, with the most suitable culture medium being acidogenic liquid with an initial pH of 8. The optimal temperature for Chlorella vulgaris cultivation was found to be 25 degrees Celsius, with removal efficiencies of 94.4% for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 68.8% for NH4+-N from the acidogenic liquid. This outcome could lead to an innovative value chain in the aquaculture industry with environmental sustainability and economic feasibility.
