High-Performance and Stable Two-Dimensional MXene-Polyethyleneimine Composite Lamellar Membranes for Molecular Separation

Summary: In this study, stable lamellar membranes were prepared by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bond formation between polycation polyethyleneimine (PEI) and negatively charged MXene. The interlayer d-spacing of the membrane could be changed by adjusting the suspension pH, allowing for precise molecular separation and high organic solvent penetration. Moreover, the insertion of PEI did not hinder the passage of water molecules. The optimized MXene-PEI membranes showed excellent channel stability.

Layer-by-layer aided β-cyclodextrin nanofilm for precise organic solvent nanofiltration

Summary: In this study, a functional interlayer derived from polyelectrolyte-based layer-by-layer self-assembly was used to prepare interlayer engineered organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes using beta-cyclodextrin as a monomer via interfacial polymerization. The developed membranes exhibited a smoother selective layer, higher crosslinking degree, and improved organic dye rejection compared to interlayer-free OSN membranes. Moreover, the membranes showed competitive permeances towards both polar and nonpolar solvents and could discriminate between dye molecules with similar molecular weights and same charge but different molecular configurations. Additionally, the membranes demonstrated good structural integrity and long-term stability.

Synthetic guidelines for highly selective mixed matrix membranes

Through different chemical and morphological characterizations, the underlying mechanism was probed, and the membranes also demonstrated improved tolerance to chlorine oxidation. With their excellent stability, the Cu-THQ MOF-based membranes further showed impressive performance in organic solvent nanofiltration involving dimethylformamide.
