From Molecules to Behavior in Long-Term Inorganic Mercury Intoxication: Unraveling Proteomic Features in Cerebellar Neurodegeneration of Rats

Leonardo Oliveira Bittencourt et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exposure to inorganic mercury (IHg) in the cerebellum of adult rats and explore the molecular mechanisms and biomarkers associated with mercury neurotoxicity using a proteomic approach. The results showed that IHg exposure increased mercury levels in the cerebellum, decreased antioxidant activity, and increased lipid peroxidation. Proteomic analysis revealed significant changes in the expression of proteins associated with synaptic signaling, energy metabolism, and nervous system development, which were correlated with increased cytotoxicity and apoptosis, neurodegenerative changes in Purkinje cells, and impaired motor coordination and balance.

Evaluation of Cerebellar Function and Integrity of Adult Rats After Long-Term Exposure to Aluminum at Equivalent Urban Region Consumption Concentrations

Rafael Monteiro Fernandes et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to aluminum affects the motor behavior of rats, but exposure at levels equivalent to human consumption in urban regions does not result in significant changes in cerebellar or motor parameters.

Summary: This review highlights the mechanisms of aluminum toxicity, suggesting that interference with iron metabolism may lead to iron-mediated cell damage. Feasible solutions to avoid aluminum toxicity are provided, including postponement of vaccination with aluminum-containing adjuvants until the availability of suitable alternatives.

Aluminium in cosmetics and personal care products

Sonia Sanajou et al.

Summary: The use of aluminium in cosmetics and personal care products has raised concerns regarding potential harm to the body. The dermal absorption of aluminium and its potential link to diseases like Alzheimer's disease are not widely understood. Further research is needed to determine the long-term effects of exposure to aluminium-based products.
