Insights into the fouling layer of flat-sheet membrane and its development in an integrated oxidation ditch-membrane bioreactor

Guohao Liao et al.

Summary: The study revealed the characteristics and development of fouling layer on flat-sheet membranes in an integrated oxidation-ditch membrane bioreactor. Membrane fouling appeared successively in biofilm and sludge fouling structures, mainly caused by organic foulants and a small amount of inorganic metal compounds, particularly protein-like and fulvic acid-like substances. Different microbial properties were found in biofilm and sludge fouling, with protein-like and fulvic acid-like substances contributing significantly to irreversible membrane fouling.

Unravelling temperature-dependent fouling mechanism in a pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor via statistical modelling

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study revealed the significant impact of operational temperature on membrane fouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactor, with low temperature causing more severe fouling. The path analysis model showed that temperature substantially affected soluble microbial products and extracellular polymeric substances, indirectly influencing total fouling rate. A temperature-based model successfully predicted membrane fouling development over different seasons, indicating that ceramic membranes have better anti-fouling properties.

Dynamics of biofilms on different polymeric membranes-A comparative study using five physiologically and genetically distinct bacteria

Hira Waheed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biofilm formation potential of anaerobic microbes on polymeric membranes and found that different membrane materials can affect the formation of biofilms, with fibrous surfaces being more favorable for biofilm formation. The growth stage was crucial for biofilm formation, with interactions between substrata and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) playing a key role in bacterial cell cohesion in mature biofilms.

Controlling the hydraulic resistance of membrane biofilms by engineering biofilm physical structure

Peter Desmond et al.

Summary: The application of membrane technology for water treatment and reuse is hindered by microbial biofilm growth, which increases resistance and decreases water quality and quantity. In this review, the authors critically assess specific structural features of membrane biofilms that affect hydraulic resistance and discuss how biofilm engineering can be used to decrease resistance.

Enriched autoinducer-2 (AI-2)-based quorum quenching consortium in a ceramic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for biofouling retardation

Boyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study enriched a facultative QQ consortium for AI-2-based QS disruption and discovered its quorum quenching performance in an AnMBR for membrane fouling retardation. The QQ consortium was able to degrade DPD and prolong membrane filtration operation in treating domestic wastewater. QQ reduced the content of proteins and carbohydrates and altered the composition of EPS and SMP. Moreover, QQ decreased the quantity of organics and planktonic microorganisms in the supernatant and enhanced methane production while reducing sulfate reduction.

Sol-gel derived silica: A review of polymer-tailored properties for energy and environmental applications

Karthikeyan Baskaran et al.

Summary: With the increasing global population, there is a growing demand for high specific surface area (SSA) materials for energy and environmental applications. Silica-based materials with high SSA, such as aerogels, are popular due to their ease of formation, thermal stability, and functionalization, making them suitable for batteries, heavy metal adsorption, and gas capture. However, the weak mechanical behavior of high SSA silica, attributed to its large pore volumes, needs to be improved or modified for these applications. Additionally, the creation of macropores in these mesoporous solids is desirable for membrane applications. This review provides an overview of sol-gel formation and polymer-based tailoring of silica, as well as the applications and challenges associated with polymer-tailored high SSA silica materials in the energy and environmental fields.

Summary: This study investigated the synergetic effects of UV and O-3 in treating real textile wastewater using a ceramic membrane reactor coupled with an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. Mitigation of membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactor treating sewage by novel quorum quenching strain of Acinetobacter originating from a full-scale membrane bioreactor

Shamas Tabraiz et al.

Summary: The novel QQ strain Acinetobacter guillouiae ST01 showed high activity in reducing quorum sensing in a membrane bioreactor by decreasing AHL concentrations in the sludge and biofilm. It also significantly reduced polysaccharide and protein levels, leading to a decrease in fouling rates in the MBR. These results suggest that A. guillouiae ST01 is a promising candidate for biofouling control in wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study introduced an effective UV photo-catalytic quorum quenching strategy to prevent biofilm formation on membrane surfaces, showing better efficacy in membrane fouling control compared to UV photolytic quorum quenching system. The photocatalytic quorum quenching system also achieved in-situ membrane cleaning and nearly complete disinfection of effluent, making it a promising strategy for preventing fouling in external membrane bioreactors for pilot- and/or full-scale applications.
