Geochemical and isotope evidence for groundwater mineralization in a semi-arid river basin, Sri Lanka

Sachintha Senarathne et al.

Summary: A hydrogeochemical study in the lower region of the Walawe river basin in Southern Sri Lanka revealed that groundwater composition is mainly influenced by anthropogenic activities and intensive evaporation, with higher heavy metal concentrations during the post-monsoon period possibly originating from agricultural inputs. Comprehensive groundwater management plans and monitoring programs are needed for ensuring sustainable management of groundwater in the lower Walawe river basin.

Impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer, Western Saudi Arabia

Natarajan Rajmohan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer in Al Lusub basin, Saudi Arabia using geochemical and statistical tools. Results showed that groundwater in the basin is brackish, with higher salinity in shallow wells compared to deeper ones. Through various analyses, it was confirmed that non-saline sources and processes, such as evaporation, reverse ion exchange, mineral dissolution, and wastewater infiltration, predominantly affected the water chemistry in this aquifer.

Investigation of Geochemical Characterization and Groundwater Quality with Special Emphasis on Health Risk Assessment in Alluvial Aquifers, South Africa

P. P. Mthembu et al.

Summary: The Maputaland coastal plain of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa is a popular tourist area, with groundwater being the major source for drinking and irrigation purposes. A comprehensive study was conducted in 53 groundwater monitoring wells, identifying dominant processes such as rock-water interaction and Na/Ca ion exchange. Water quality index (WQI) ranges from 18.9 to 157.1, with most samples classified as good but with spatial distribution variations. Health risk assessment of trace elements indicates potential adverse effects, especially on infants, suggesting the need for treatment before utilization and further extended studies on groundwater resources.
