Insights into the Synthesis, types and application of iron Nanoparticles: The overlooked significance of environmental effects

Weihua Xu et al.

Summary: Iron nanoparticles have been extensively studied and applied in environmental protection due to their unique characteristics. Modified iron nanoparticles can improve the efficiency of pollutant removal, and the use of stable iron nanoparticles may be a solution to overcome aggregation and retention issues. The application of iron nanoparticles has significant effects on environmental pH value, pollutant morphology, and toxicity to microorganisms.

Cadmium and arsenic availability in soil under submerged incubation: The influence of humic substances on iron speciation

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The addition of HSs was found to influence the availability of Cd/As in soil, with HA-Na and BFA having opposite effects on reducing Cd leaching and increasing As extractability. However, HA-Na was more effective in immobilizing Cd, while BFA was stronger in mobilizing As.

Nanoscale Sulfur Improves Plant Growth and Reduces Arsenic Toxicity and Accumulation in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Ahmed G. Meselhy et al.

Summary: Nanoscale sulfur (NS) application significantly increased rice seedling biomass and mature plant seed yield, while alleviating arsenic (As) toxicity. NS treatment also reduced As accumulation in plant tissues, demonstrating its potential to improve crop growth and reduce As levels in the food chain.

How do phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles drive redox reactions to reduce cadmium availability in a flooded paddy soil?

Jiajiang Lin et al.

Summary: The addition of phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles reduced the availability of cadmium in flooded soil and decreased its uptake by rice plants. Microbial community shifts were observed with an increase in certain bacteria and a decrease in others after the application of phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into a potential low-cost remediation strategy for cadmium-contaminated paddy soils.

Arsenic and selenium distribution and speciation in coal and coal combustion by-products from coal-fired power plants

Jin Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and speciation of arsenic and selenium in coal and burning byproducts in five coal-fired power plants in China. It was found that the concentrations of As and Se in fly ash and gypsum were significantly higher than in coal, indicating the need for proper disposal of coal-fired solid wastes.

Arsenopyrite weathering in acidic water: Humic acid affection and arsenic transformation

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Arsenopyrite, a common metal sulfide mineral, weathers readily in the presence of humic acid (HA) and is influenced by factors such as temperature and acidity. Research findings showed that HA can form complexes with arsenic and iron ions, affecting the weathering behavior and mechanism of arsenopyrite. Electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the weathering process of arsenopyrite, providing valuable insights for understanding the fate and transport of arsenic in acidic conditions.

Soil Organic Carbon Enrichment Triggers In Situ Nitrogen Interception by Phototrophic Biofilms at the Soil-Water Interface: From Regional Scale to Microscale

Junzhuo Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant positive correlation between nitrogen immobilized in biofilm biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) content. High SOC, especially elevated levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), were found to trigger increased bacterial and algal diversity, biomass accumulation, and inorganic nitrogen assimilation in phototrophic biofilms. Metatranscriptomics results showed distinct expression of key proteins related to photosynthesis and nitrogen immobilization at high SOC and DOC levels.
