Assessment of heavy metal pollution in urban and peri-urban soil of Setif city (High Plains, eastern Algeria)

Seifeddine Sellami et al.

Summary: This study assesses the heavy metal pollution in urban and peri-urban soils in and around Setif city, eastern Algeria. The results show that zinc and lead concentrations exceed the Chinese background values, posing a significant threat to human health. Vehicle emissions, industrial emissions, and uncontrolled waste landfill are identified as the main sources of pollution. The study highlights the need for measures to mitigate heavy metal pollution in Setif city and emphasizes the importance of a sustainable development plan to ensure optimal future environmental conditions.

Weathering and pedogenesis of the late Pleistocene and Holocene aeolian loess-paleosol sections in the Yellow River source area, NE Tibetan Plateau

Ya-na Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigates aeolian loess-paleosol sections on the northeast Tibetan Plateau to establish a chronostratigraphic framework and understand the weathering and pedogenesis of the soil. The results show a close relationship between the local climatic evolution during the late Pleistocene-Holocene and the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon and the Westerlies.

Risk assessment of heavy metals consumption through onion on human health in Iran

Samira Shokri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of heavy metals through onion consumption on human health. The results showed that all collected samples contained heavy metals, but they did not pose a concern for non-cancerous diseases and carcinogenic risk. It is recommended to study the source of heavy metals to manage and prevent further pollution.

Comparison of natural and technogenic soils developed on volcanic ash by Vis-NIR spectroscopy

Erika Di Iorio et al.

Summary: This study compares the soil biological properties and carbon storage of three young Technosols derived from volcanic soil in Campi Flegrei, Italy, with two natural volcanic soils. The results show that Technosols have lower soil organic matter content compared to natural volcanic soils. However, after six years of vegetation, Technosols show significant potential for carbon sequestration and supporting biological activity.

Exploring land snails' response to habitat characteristics and their potential as bioindicators of riparian forest quality

Voichita Gheoca et al.

Summary: The study found that habitat characteristics such as forest continuity, width, and abundance of dead wood significantly influenced the abundance and diversity of snail communities in central European riparian forests. Fragmentation was identified as the main factor affecting the abundance of land snail communities. The total abundance of land snail communities and species richness were good predictors of habitat quality, with snail abundance being more powerful than diversity in indicating riparian forest quality.

In situ assessment of genetic and epigenetic alterations in frog Rana plancyi and Rana limnocharis inhabiting aquatic ecosystems associated with Pb/Zn/Cu mining

Junjie Hu et al.

Summary: The study showed that surface water in the Dexing mining region is heavily contaminated with trace metals, resulting in bioaccumulation of trace metals in the liver of two frog species. Genotoxic and epigenotoxic effects were observed in the genetic and epigenetic levels, indicating significant ecological risks for aquatic organisms near the mining region. DNA damage and global DNA methylation levels can serve as promising biomarkers for assessing the ecological risk of trace metal pollution in aquatic amphibian frogs.

Association between heavy metals and colon cancer: an ecological study based on geographical information systems in North-Eastern Iran

Behzad Kiani et al.

Summary: By analyzing the concentration of heavy metals in rice produced in northeastern Iran and the age-standardized incidence rate of colon cancer, the study found that areas with higher cobalt concentrations were associated with higher colon cancer incidence in men, while higher selenium concentrations were linked to lower incidence. Further investigation is needed to clarify the reasons for these discrepancies, and regular monitoring of heavy metal levels in consumed rice is recommended.

Influence of the degree of saturation on carbon steel corrosion in soil

Ryo Hirata et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of carbon steel in artificial soils with 3% NaCl solution of different saturations was studied. The results showed that carbon steel corroded uniformly at slower rates in saturated soil and non-uniformly at higher rates in unsaturated soils. The influence of water saturation on carbon steel corrosion was discussed based on the measured corrosion current density and corroded surface area percentage.

Summary: The assessment of Technosols quality in urban environments is crucial for maintaining ecosystems impacted by human activities. This study analyzed various indices to evaluate mineral accumulation, ecological risk, edaphon activity, fertility, and overall soil quality of Technosols in suburban Naples over eight years. The study found changes in chemical and biological indices, indicating a decrease in soil quality and increase in ecological risk over time.
