Pore structure and surface property design of silicon carbide membrane for water-in-oil emulsification

Yaxin Wang et al.

Summary: In recent years, ceramic membranes have been used as emulsification media for preparing emulsified heavy oils in residue fluid catalytic cracking units. Silicon carbide (SiC) material is chosen for its excellent chemical and thermal stabilities in harsh environments. A superhydrophobic SiC emulsified functional membrane was prepared using an in-situ sintering method and subsequent grafting modification. The open porosity of the membranes can be controlled, and the membranes exhibited high flux and stability during the preparation of water-in-oil emulsions. Furthermore, the fouled membranes can be easily regenerated by ultrasonic cleaning with ethanol.

Oil-in-water emulsion separation: Fouling of alumina membranes with and without a silicon carbide deposition in constant flux filtration mode

Mingliang Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the fouling of alumina and silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion treatment. The results showed that alumina membranes had higher fouling tendencies at low permeate flux, while SiC-deposited membranes exhibited lower fouling tendencies and higher cleaning efficiencies. The emulsion chemistry, including surfactant concentration, pH, salinity, and Ca2+ concentration, had an impact on membrane fouling. The presence of Ca2+ led to significant irreversible fouling of both membranes.

Summary: This study evaluated the application of tin tetrachloride (SnCl4) as the main coagulant and rubber seed (RS) as the natural coagulant aid in treating landfill leachate. The results showed that SnCl4 was effective in removing suspended solids and color, while RS acted as a coagulant aid to enhance the performance of SnCl4.

Enhancing ultrafiltration of algal-rich water using ferrate activated with sodium percarbonate: Foulants variation, membrane fouling alleviation, and collaborative mechanism

Jinchuan Lian et al.

Summary: A novel strategy coupling ferrate and sodium percarbonate was proposed to improve ultrafiltration (UF) performance and alleviate membrane fouling resulted by algal foulants. The coupling process activated ferrate to generate high-valent intermediates, which played a crucial role in high-efficiency oxidation for algal foulants. The collaborative effect of ferrate and sodium percarbonate increased the terminal specific flux and reduced fouling resistances.

Effective construction of anti-fouling zwitterion-functionalized ceramic membranes for separation of oil-in-water emulsion based on PDA/PEI co-deposition

Wei Luan et al.

Summary: Ceramic membranes are widely used for oil-water separation due to their high flux, excellent chemical stability, strong hydrophilicity, and good fouling resistance. This study used a co-deposition reaction to modify the surface of ceramic membranes, enhancing their anti-fouling performance. The zwitterion-functionalized ceramic membrane showed improved hydrophilicity and achieved double the permeance compared to the original membrane during the separation of oil-in-water emulsion, indicating good anti-fouling performance.

Application of cerium and lanthanum coagulants in wastewater treatment-A comparative assessment to magnesium, aluminum, and iron coagulants

George William Kajjumba et al.

Summary: This study examined the treatment of a centrate stream with lanthanides through coagulation, comparing their performance with other commonly used coagulants. Results showed that CeCl3, LaCl3, and Na2Al2O4 coagulants were effective in precipitating phosphate at various pH levels and were cost-effective. Lanthanides, particularly CeCl3 and LaCl3, outperformed other coagulants in phosphorus removal at a lower cost.

Dissect the role of particle size through collision-attachment simulations for colloidal fouling of RO/NF membranes

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the role of colloidal size on fouling using a collision-attachment approach, highlighting the importance of four competing mechanisms in governing the net effect of particle size on fouling. It shows that larger particles can enhance flux stability when strong foulant-membrane repulsion prevails, but this trend may be reversed for weak foulant-membrane interaction.

Effect of Membrane Materials and Operational Parameters on Performance and Energy Consumption of Oil/Water Emulsion Filtration

Nafiu Umar Barambu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of membrane material, operational pressure, and crude oil concentration on the filtration performance of oil/water emulsion. Results show that fouling resistant membrane offers high permeability for oil/water emulsion, leading to low energy consumption. Sustainable permeability can be achieved when treating 1000 ppm oil/water emulsion, but severe membrane fouling is observed when treating emulsions containing crude oils of >3000 ppm to a point of no flux.
