Enhanced delivery of amendments in fractured clay sites based on multi-point injection: An analytical study

He Chen et al.

Summary: This study develops a two-dimensional analytical model for enhanced delivery of amendments in a finite-domain low-permeability matrix through multi-point injection in a natural, hydraulic or pneumatic fracture. Results show that with a stronger line source formed in the fracture right after injection, the concentration distribution of amendments in the matrix is more uniform at each depth resulting in a smaller residual rate. A controlled slow-release system can maintain a more stable concentration distribution in the fracture, giving a longer residence time.

Summary: This study presents a novel multi-layer diffusion model to describe the storage and discharge behavior of contaminants in low permeability sediments. The researchers found that the storage of contaminants in the aquitards varied with different source depletion patterns, and the proposed diffusion model provided more accurate predictions of back-diffusion behavior in heterogeneous aquitards compared to the equivalent homogeneous model.

Combination of steam-enhanced extraction and electrical resistance heating for efficient remediation of perchloroethylene-contaminated soil: Coupling merits and energy consumption

Rui Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, a laboratory-scale experimental device was developed to explore the coupling merits of two traditional desorption technologies: steam-enhanced extraction (SEE) and electrical resistance heating (ERH). The results showed that injecting high-density steam into moist soil could fracture the soil matrix and lead to preferential steam flow. When ERH and SEE were combined, preheating the soil increased permeability and alleviated the problem of preferential steam flow. The injection of steam heated the soil and provided moisture for maintaining power stability in the ERH process. The combined method reduced energy consumption compared to ERH or SEE alone.

Effects of airflow rate distribution and nitrobenzene removal in an aquifer with a low-permeability lens during surfactant-enhanced air sparging

Meng Yao et al.

Summary: The application of surfactant-enhanced air sparging (SEAS) in heterogeneous aquifers has been studied in this research. Experimental results showed that the surfactant significantly reduced the blocking effect of the geological interface on airflow and improved the removal effect of nitrobenzene in the aquifer. However, long-term SEAS remediation may result in the redistribution of the surfactant, which is not conducive to the continuous removal of nitrobenzene in the aquifer.
