Continuous cultivation of microalgae in photobioreactors as a source of renewable energy: Current status and future challenges

Angela Paul Peter et al.

Summary: Microalgae are promising sustainable energy sources for biodiesel production due to their rapid photosynthesis growth rate and ability to be cultivated in various water sources. The utilization of photosynthesis reactions by microalgae allows for the conversion of light energy into renewable energy, while closed photobioreactors provide resistance to contamination and enable monitoring of environmental factors.

Insights into removal of antibiotics by selected microalgae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella sorokiniana, Dunaliella tertiolecta and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata)

Andrea Hom-Diaz et al.

Summary: The increasing contamination of worldwide water with antibiotics has become a concern. Microalgae-mediated remediation is of interest due to their ability to take up nutrients and produce biomass. While the sorption of pollutants by microalgae has been widely reported, few studies have proven the biodegradation of pollutants by microalgae.

An exploration of natural synergy using microalgae for the remediation of pharmaceuticals and xenobiotics in wastewater

Rahul Kumar Goswami et al.

Summary: Wastewater contains a wide range of hazardous pollutants, and conventional treatment methods are ineffective in removing them. Microalgae-based treatment systems show promise in partially treating pharmaceutical and xenobiotic wastewater. However, some antibiotics are toxic to microalgae at low concentrations. Advancements and optimization of microalgae treatment systems have improved removal efficiency, but it depends on the species and concentration of microalgae. This review highlights the potential of microalgae for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater and discusses the role of enzymes, microalgal EPS interaction, and toxicity of pharmaceutical contaminants. It also examines various factors affecting microalgae growth in wastewater treatment and critically analyzes advancements in microalgae-based treatment techniques.

Microalgae cultivation for antibiotic oxytetracycline wastewater treatment

Shuai Wu et al.

Summary: Microalgae-based technology is an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and efficient approach for treating oxytetracycline (OTC) wastewater. This study found that the growth of microalgae was promoted at OTC concentrations below 50 mg L-1, but significantly inhibited at concentrations higher than 100 mg L-1. The removal of OTC by microalgae was mainly attributed to photolysis, biodegradation, biosorption, and hydrolysis. The study confirms that microalgae can be an excellent technology for treating antibiotics wastewater while accumulating microalgae biomass.

Antibiotic pollution in lakes in China: Emission estimation and fate modeling using a temperature-dependent multimedia model

Ya-Ya Cai et al.

Summary: The high use of antibiotics poses a serious threat to human and environmental health worldwide. This study investigated the emission and fate of 34 frequently detected antibiotics in 226 Chinese lakes. It was found that antibiotics emissions in Eastern China were 3800 times higher than that in Western China. The model successfully simulated the antibiotic fate by considering lake stratification, freeze-melt cycles, and stable conditions throughout the year. Deep-water lakes were identified as efficient natural storage mediums for antibiotics. The study provides valuable guidance for the remediation of contaminated lakes.

Attenuation pathways of erythromycin and biochemical responses related to algal growth and lipid synthesis in a microalga-effluent system

Xiaotong Wang et al.

Summary: Microalgal cultivation in municipal wastewater treatment plants can couple wastewater treatment with microalgae energy utilization. However, residual antibiotics in effluents from WWTPs can affect the growth of microalgae. The study found that erythromycin attenuation in a microalga-effluent system was mainly due to hydrolysis, photolysis, and biodegradation, with the latter having the highest removal rate. Exposure to erythromycin led to biochemical responses in the microalgae, including a decrease in photosynthetic pigment content, an increase in ROS production, and changes in enzyme activities related to photosynthesis and lipid production.

Tetracycline-induced decoupling of symbiosis in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge

Shulian Wang et al.

Summary: Tetracycline was found to inhibit ammonia-N removal in non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge by mainly affecting microalgal assimilation and chlorophyll production. The presence of tetracycline also led to decreased dissolved oxygen concentration and inhibition of microalgae containing green algae and cyanobacteria, indicating a decoupling of symbiosis in the microalgal-bacterial granular sludge.

Efficient photocatalytic destruction of recalcitrant micropollutants using graphitic carbon nitride under simulated sunlight irradiation

Jiexi Zhong et al.

Summary: This study developed an economic photocatalytic process to degrade micropollutants using a synthesized urea-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The g-C3N4 exhibited high efficiency in degrading carbamazepine (CBZ) under simulated solar irradiation, with significant impacts of pH, light intensity, and initial CBZ concentration on removal efficiency. The presence of superoxide radicals and holes as major active radicals was confirmed, suggesting g-C3N4's potential as a promising catalyst for tertiary wastewater treatment processes.
