Migration and transformation mechanism of phosphorus in waste activated sludge during anaerobic fermentation and hydrothermal conversion

Yan Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that controlling pH during the anaerobic fermentation process significantly influenced the release and transformation of phosphorus, with alkaline conditions facilitating the release of AP phosphorus and acidic conditions facilitating the release of NAIP and organic phosphorus. During the subsequent HTC process, NaOH promoted the transfer of phosphorus into the liquid phase, while Ca(OH)2 enhanced the incorporation of phosphorus into solid products and the transformation from NAIP to AP.

Understanding the mechanism of how anaerobic fermentation deteriorates sludge dewaterability

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic fermentation increases proteins, polysaccharides, humic acids, and PO43- concentrations but decreases Ca2+ amount in the liquid phase, leading to increased viscosity and decreased zeta potential, affecting the flocculability of sludge. The increase of humic acids is identified as the major contributor to the deterioration of sludge dewatering. Additionally, anaerobic fermentation causes the transformation of microbes from Gram-negative to Gram-positive, enhancing the resistance of mechanical forces and negative charges on sludge flocs.

Anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste: Methane production performance and mechanism analysis

Yuqi Wu et al.

Summary: The study on anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste showed that adding 1.5% and 3% of fish waste could enhance methane production, while adding more than 6% inhibited methane production severely. Microbial community analysis revealed dominance of hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic methanogenesis pathways during anaerobic co-digestion.

Anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge for volatile fatty acid production: Recent updates of pretreatment methods and the potential effect of humic and nutrients substances

Ting Liang et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the recent advancements in volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge. Factors affecting VFAs production including sludge properties, metabolic pathways, and pretreatment methods were evaluated. It was found that additives and pretreatment are energetically preferred for accelerating VFAs accumulation, while different structures of humic substances may have varying effects on the fermentation process and VFAs production.

Novel CaO2 beads used in the anaerobic fermentation of iron-rich sludge for simultaneous short-chain fatty acids and phosphorus recovery under ambient conditions

Qian Ping et al.

Summary: The use of novel composite CaO2 beads can enhance the production of total short-chain fatty acids (TSCFAs) and phosphorus (P) recovery from iron-rich waste activated sludge during ambient anaerobic fermentation. The CaO2 beads with porous structure and sustained release of CaO2 effectively enriched dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) and promoted iron-reduction related genes, leading to a high TSCFAs production and P recovery rate. The P-rich beads are easily separated from sludge for further P recovery, while the supernatant containing acetate and Fe2+ can be returned to wastewater treatment line for nutrient removal.

Obstacles faced by methanogenic archaea originating from substrate-driven toxicants in anaerobic digestion

Yafan Cai et al.

Summary: This review discusses the effects of toxicants originating from waste treatment on anaerobic digestion, particularly focusing on the activity of methanogenic archaea, the succession of MA species, and the methanogenic pathways. Under the pressure of toxicants, MA activity decreases, leading to succession among methanogens and changes in methanogenic pathways, ultimately affecting the performance of anaerobic digestion.

In-situ alkaline enhanced two-stage anaerobic digestion system for waste cooking oil and sewage sludge co-digestion

Wangwang Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the efficiency of using in-situ mild alkaline enhanced two-stage continuous stirred tank reactors (ALK-2-CSTRs) for co-digesting waste cooking oil and sewage sludge, showing a significant increase in methane yield. The microbial community analysis reveals the stimulation of lipolytic bacteria and hydrogenotrophic methanogens in ALK-2-CSTRs, indicating the promotion of the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway. Cost evaluation also shows the economical superiority of ALK-2-CSTR over existing strategies for enhancing methane yield from co-substrates.

Syntrophic metabolism facilitates Methanosarcina-led methanation in the anaerobic digestion of lipidic slaughterhouse waste

Shouvik Saha et al.

Summary: Different inoculum to slaughterhouse waste ratios influence digester performance, substrate utilization, and methane yield through microbial shifts and metabolic syntrophy. Interactions among acetogenic and acetate-oxidizing species with methanogens play a critical role in improving methanogenic activity. Syntrophic interactions among core microbiota induce major metabolic activities and quorum sensing.
