Delineation of the exposure-response causality chain of chronic copper toxicity to the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, with a TK-TD model based on concepts of biotic ligand model and subcellular metal partitioning model

T. T. Yen Le et al.

Summary: A toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model was constructed and calibrated with data from an experiment, reasonably explaining the dynamics of subcellular Cu partitioning and the effect mechanism. The model showed that Na+ had limited influence on Cu2+ uptake at low Na+ concentrations in water, and that Cu was taken up into the metabolically available pool (MAP) at a higher rate than into cellular debris.

Earthworms as candidates for remediation of potentially toxic elements contaminated soils and mitigating the environmental and human health risks: A review

Ran Xiao et al.

Summary: Earthworms have the potential to remediate soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), but thorough research and reviews on this topic are currently lacking. This review provides insights into the distribution and abundance of earthworms in PTEs contaminated soils, the influence of PTEs on earthworm communities, factors affecting earthworm PTEs accumulation and elimination, and the dynamics of PTEs in earthworm-amended soils.

Modification of naturally abundant resources for remediation of potentially toxic elements: A review

Bing Han et al.

Summary: Water and soil contamination by PTEs poses a critical threat to the global ecosystem and human health. Naturally abundant resources, such as bentonite and zeolite, offer advantages over manufactured materials for environmental remediation. Despite facing challenges in performance and cost, recent studies provide a strong foundation for remediation processes, with effective modification strategies offering potential for wider practical applications.

Toxicokinetics of metals in the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus exposed to field-contaminated soils from a mining area

Lulu Zhang et al.

Summary: Toxicokinetics is a useful tool for assessing the risk of metal-contaminated soils. This study investigated the toxicokinetics of non-essential and essential elements in Enchytraeus crypticus exposed to metal-contaminated soils from a mining area. The study found different uptake-elimination patterns for different elements and suggested that longer exposure times are needed for elements like Cd. pH and dissolved organic carbon levels were found to be key factors controlling Cd uptake. The study also highlighted the potential risk of Cd biomagnification in the food chain of the mining area ecosystem.

Development of a toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model simulating chronic copper toxicity to the Zebra mussel based on subcellular fractionation

Summary: A toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model based on subcellular metal partitioning is presented for simulating chronic toxicity of copper. The study indicates ineffective detoxification at high exposure levels and spill-over effects of detoxification.

Toxicokinetics of copper and cadmium in the soil model Enchytraeus crypticus (Oligochaeta)

Fatima C. F. Santos et al.

Summary: The study assessed the toxicokinetics of copper and cadmium in the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus and their effects on reproduction. Results showed rapid uptake of copper and increasing internal concentration of cadmium without reaching a clear steady state. When transferred to clean soil, copper was rapidly eliminated while cadmium-exposed animals still had increased residue levels.
