Genome-wide identification of seven superoxide dismutase genes in the marine rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and modulated expression and enzymatic activity in response to microplastics and nutritional status

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: This study cloned and characterized SOD-related genes from marine rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and found that SOD activity and expression were affected by the nutritional status. Exposure to MPs reduced rotifer density and increased oxidative stress indicators under the refeeding condition but had no effect under the feeding and starvation conditions.

Summary: This study investigates the proteomic and physiological responses of Alexandrium pacificum strains to metal stresses. The findings highlight the adaptive proteomic and physiological responses of the strains to metal-contaminated ecosystems, which may contribute to their ecological success. Additionally, the study reveals a positive correlation between PST production and photosynthesis in the strains.

Low salinity causes oxidative stress and modulates specific antioxidant gene expression in the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum

Quynh Thi Nhu Bui et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of low salinity on the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum. The results showed that low salinity led to a decrease in cell density, an increase in cell size, and a decrease in photosynthesis efficiency. Additionally, low salinity induced cellular oxidative stress and affected the antioxidant systems in the toxic dinoflagellates.

The influence of hardness at varying pH on zinc toxicity and lability to a freshwater microalga, Chlorella sp.

Gwilym A. Price et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of water hardness and pH on the toxicity of zinc to the growth rate of Chlorella sp. The results showed that zinc toxicity decreased with increasing water hardness. However, when the water hardness exceeded a certain range, zinc toxicity did not decrease significantly. The study also found that changes in hardness affected zinc toxicity rather than changes in metal lability.
