Distribution and ten-year temporal trends (2009-2018) of perfluoroalkyl substances in gull eggs from Spanish breeding colonies

Pere Colomer-Vidal et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the geographical distribution and 10-year temporal trends of 17 PFAS in eggs of two gull species from 5 main Spanish colonies. PFOS was the predominant compound in all samples, with varying concentrations and patterns observed among different colonies. The study highlights the importance of continuous long-term monitoring using gull eggs as bioindicators of environmental pollution.

Levels and profiles of perfluorinated alkyl acids in liver tissues of birds with different habitat types and trophic levels from an urbanized coastal region of South Korea

Sang Hee Hong et al.

Summary: The study found a wide range of PFAAs in bird livers from the Korean coasts, with higher levels in higher trophic and marine birds influenced by trophic position and habitat type. This suggests a wide use of PFAAs in Korea and a relatively high load of PFAAs in inland and estuarine bird species compared to marine birds.

Pilot monitoring scheme of water pollutants in Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas

Maria Dulsat-Masvidal et al.

Summary: In this study, a monitoring scheme was established to determine the presence and distribution of widely used pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organophosphate esters, and perfluoroalkyl substances in water bodies from Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Spain. The study found that these chemicals were widespread throughout the study areas, highlighting the need for pollution control and biodiversity protection.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Ducks and the Relationship with Concentrations in Water, Sediment, and Soil

Simon Sharp et al.

Summary: The study in Victoria, Australia investigated the occurrence and concentration of PFAS in game ducks and the environment, revealing a variety of short- and long-chain carboxylic and sulfonic acids. Findings showed generally low concentrations of PFOS in wetlands, but higher concentrations near contaminated sources such as defense bases or urban areas.

Evaluation of the occurrence and fate of pesticides in a typical Mediterranean delta ecosystem (Ebro River Delta) and risk assessment for aquatic organisms

Maria Vittoria Barbieri et al.

Summary: During the main rice-growing season in the Ebro River Delta, a variety of pesticides were detected in the water of irrigation and drainage channels, posing potential risks to local ecosystems and seafood production activities. Some banned pesticides were found at high concentrations, potentially impacting non-target aquatic organisms.

Trends and Patterns of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Blood Plasma Samples of Bald Eagle Nestlings in Wisconsin and Minnesota, USA

Cheryl R. Dykstra et al.

Summary: The study revealed variations in PFAS concentrations in nestling blood plasma among different study areas, with higher levels in industrialized river sites and PFOS being the most abundant analyte. Nestling age was found to significantly influence PFAS concentrations, with levels increasing as nestlings grow.

Understanding PFAAs exposure in a generalist seabird species breeding in the vicinity of a fluorochemical plant: Influence of maternal transfer and diet

Ana Lopez-Antia et al.

Summary: Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are currently a focus of scientific and regulatory attention. This study examined PFAAs exposure in chicks of a generalist seabird species, finding that maternal transfer plays a significant role in determining chicks' PFAAs burden. The association between specific stable isotopes and PFOS suggests a higher exposure in birds with a predominantly marine diet.

Analysis of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds in gull eggs by GC-HRMS using a novel atmospheric pressure photoionization source

Juan F. Ayala-Cabrera et al.

Summary: A new analytical method was developed for the selective determination of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds in gull egg samples, showing high selectivity and sensitivity for complex environmental samples. The results demonstrated significant differences in the concentration profiles of Dechlorane Plus in eggs from different gull breeding locations and between gull species of the same protected area. This study highlights the performance of the GC-APPI-HRMS system for the analysis of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds.

High levels of fluoroalkyl substances and potential disruption of thyroid hormones in three gull species from South Western France

M. Sebastiano et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of PFAS in three seabird species in South Western France, finding that the birds were exposed to levels comparable to highly contaminated species from other geographical areas. PFAS were negatively associated with the body condition of two studied species, with results being sex-dependent. For the great black-backed gull, a positive association was found between exposure to PFAS and TT3, suggesting a potential disrupting mechanism of PFAS exposure.
