Novel solar/sulfite advanced oxidation process for carbamazepine degradation: Radical chemistry, transformation pathways, influence on disinfection byproducts and toxic changes

Han Chen et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) play a significant role in eliminating persistent micro-contaminants in water. In this study, a solar/sulfite process was developed to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) and showed effectiveness in CBZ elimination. The generated sulfate and hydroxyl radicals contributed to the degradation of CBZ, and the process pH and the presence of certain substances affected the degradation efficiency. The study also identified major degradation intermediates of CBZ and proposed a transformation pathway. Furthermore, the solar/sulfite pretreatment reduced the formation of disinfection byproducts during subsequent chlorination, demonstrating its potential in controlling water contamination.

Enhanced adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by edible, nutrient-amended montmorillonite clays

Meichen Wang et al.

Summary: Montmorillonites amended with carnitine and choline showed high binding capacity for PFAS in stomach-simulating conditions. The interactions of PFAS with amended clays were primarily through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, as well as hydrogen bonding. The study confirmed the potential of nutrient-amended clays to reduce the bioavailability of PFAS in contaminated water and diets.

Novel FeII/EDDS/UV/PAA advanced oxidation process: Mechanisms and applications for naproxen degradation at neutral pH and low FeII dosage

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of the integrated FEUP process for the degradation of naproxen (NAP) at neutral pH, with a four-phase conceptual process of degradation established. Superior degradation performance was achieved under low FeII dosage and neutral conditions. The effect of water matrices on NAP degradation was also evaluated, showing an inhibiting effect of Br-, HCO3-/CO32-, and humic acid (HA) while Cl- showed no influence in the FEUP process.

Enhancing Interface Reactions by Introducing Microbubbles into a Plasma Treatment Process for Efficient Decomposition of PFOA

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Efficient destruction of high concentration PFOA was achieved using a needle-plate pulsed discharge reactor with microbubbles as carriers. Removal efficiency reached 81.5% in air discharge and 95.3% in Ar discharge, with a defluorination ratio of no less than 50%. PFOA was degraded into short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids and other fluorinated transformation products, showing the robustness of the treatment process in various water matrices.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal by flotation with cationic surfactants

Yueh-Feng Li et al.

Summary: Foam flotation process aided by cationic surfactants proved to be an efficient method for separating and recovering PFOA, with surfactants having alkyl chains similar in length to PFOA showing higher affinities. OTAB was able to completely remove PFOA in 20 minutes in actual wastewater, indicating the potential of this method for industrial applications.

Summary: This study investigates the stabilization mechanism of bulk nanobubbles using molecular dynamics methods. The results show that the gas inside nanobubbles has ultrahigh density, there is a double-layer surface charge on the bubble, and the interaction between gas and water molecules weakens the interfacial hydrogen bond, which contributes to bubble stabilization.
