Climate and nutrients regulate biographical patterns and health risks of antibiotic resistance genes in mangrove environment br

Huaxian Zhao et al.

Summary: A study conducted in mangrove wetlands in South China revealed the presence of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and their geographic distribution patterns. The study also found that a higher number of connections in the network of high-risk ARGs resulted in increased health risks. Geographic distance and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were identified as influential factors affecting the distribution of ARGs, and both ARGs and MGEs contributed significantly to the health risk profiles in mangrove ecosystems.

Accelerated spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) induced by non-antibiotic conditions: Roles and mechanisms

Summary: This study investigates the role and mechanisms of non-antibiotic chemicals and environmental factors in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The results suggest that the impact of antibiotics has been overestimated, while non-antibiotic chemicals and conditions have important influences on ARG dissemination.

The response of microbial community structure and sediment properties to anthropogenic activities in Caohai wetland sediments

Yunchuan Long et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of sediment microbial communities in Caohai Lake to anthropogenic activities and found that physicochemical changes caused by human activities may influence enzyme activities in a non-linear pattern. Although there were few differences in alpha diversity indices between high and low disturbed areas, clear disparities in microbial community composition and beta-diversity analysis were observed. The intensity of anthropogenic impacts in Caohai was found not to have reached potential thresholds, and the best distinguish biomarkers between the two areas were not necessarily the ones with high microbial abundance.

Diverse and abundant antibiotic resistance genes in mangrove area and their relationship with bacterial communities - A study in Hainan Island, China

Chunxia Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a variety of ARGs were found in the mangrove areas of Hainan, China, with MRGs accounting for the highest proportion. The ARGs were significantly positively correlated with MGEs, indicating a complex contamination situation in the study area. The sediments in the Hainan mangrove area contained a large number of bacterial genera, some of which may be the main hosts of ARGs, contributing to our understanding of distribution and potential hosts of ARGs and providing a scientific basis for the protection and management of the Hainan mangrove ecosystem.

Study of Heavy Metals and Microbial Communities in Contaminated Sediments Along an Urban Estuary

Jun Yi et al.

Summary: Estuarine sediments are increasingly contaminated by heavy metals due to urbanization and human activities, which pose risks to microbial communities and ecosystems. Research findings show that Cr and Cu concentrations in intertidal sediments of the urbanized Yangtze River estuary consistently exceed threshold effect concentrations, indicating weak to moderate pollution levels and considerable to high ecological risks across all sampling sites. Redundancy and correlation analyses reveal that Zn and Cr play explanatory roles in shifts in microbial community structures, with Zn concentration proposed as a potent indicator for heavy metal pollution-associated microbial community compositional shifts under urbanized estuarine conditions.
