Optimization of acrylic-styrene latex-based biofilms as a platform for biological indoor air treatment

Javier Gonzalez-Martin et al.

Summary: A latex-based biocoating was optimized for VOC removal using activated sludge dominated by Patescibacteria. Different components in the mixture affected the removal efficiency differently, with toluene and pinene showing higher removal rates. High water content was beneficial for biocoating performance, while VOC mass-transfer was the main limiting factor for the latex-based biocoating.

Association between exposure to air pollution and late-life neurodegenerative disorders: An umbrella review

LeeAnn Tan et al.

Summary: The umbrella review focused on the association between exposure to air pollution, specifically fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and increased risk of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. While individual studies frequently report these associations, attempts at quantitative synthesis generally result in suggestive support for the strength of the associations. Further improvements in study design, analysis, and reporting are recommended for future research to enhance consistency and utility of findings.

Systematic comparison of a biotrickling filter and a conventional filter for the removal of a mixture of hydrophobic VOCs by Candida subhashii

Milena Marycz et al.

Summary: This study systematically compared the potential of a conventional fungal biofilter (BF) and a fungal biotrickling filter (BTF) for the abatement of a mixture of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), confirming the ability of Candida subhashii to degrade n-hexane, trichloroethylene, toluene, and alpha-pinene.

Evaluating degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) potential by indigenous bacteria isolated from highly contaminated riverbank sediments

Omer Acer et al.

Summary: This study isolated 15 novel aerobic PAH degraders, with three strains (MHR3A, MHR3B, and MHRN15A) showing promising potential for PAH degradation. Among them, MHR3B exhibited the highest degradation efficiency for fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene without any additional surfactants.

Reduction in VOC emissions by intermittent aeration in bioreactor landfills with gas-water joint regulation

Yi-Xuan Chu et al.

Summary: Intermittent aeration was found to be an effective method for accelerating the stabilization of landfilled waste, reducing environmental costs and risks. Compared with continuous aeration, intermittent aeration can quickly degrade landfill waste, decrease total VOC emissions, lower ventilation rates and reduce aeration costs.

The core microbiome is responsible for volatile silicon and organic compounds degradation during anoxic lab scale biotrickling filter performance

Ellana Boada et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community in a lab-scale biotrickling filter and its degradation capacity for volatile silicon compounds. Results showed that microbial diversity and richness decreased during operation, with core microbiome shifting with different packing materials. A stable microbial community for siloxane bioremoval was identified, offering a complementary alternative to activated carbon adsorption.

Anaerobic Benzene Biodegradation Linked to the Growth of Highly Specific Bacterial Clades

Courtney R. A. Toth et al.

Summary: Reliance on bioremediation to remove benzene from anoxic environments has been proven risky due to unknown reasons. Research has shown a strong link between anaerobic benzene biodegradation and the enrichment of specific microbes, which can facilitate benzene degradation. Different bioremediation approaches have varying effects on benzene degradation, with nitrate-amended microcosms promoting benzene biodegradation. Additionally, the presence of other hydrocarbon co-contaminants can decrease the rate of benzene degradation.
