Active repair of a dinuclear photocatalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen production

Michael G. Pfeffer et al.

Summary: The molecular apparatus of biological photosynthesis can repair itself, while artificial photosynthetic devices can break down when their components are compromised. This study demonstrates the active repair of an artificial photosynthetic molecular device, leading to the restoration of catalytic activity. Hydrogenation of the bridging ligand was identified as the deactivation mechanism, which was repaired through the light-driven generation of singlet oxygen.

Tracking Charge Accumulation in a Functional Triazole-Linked Ruthenium-Rhenium Dyad Towards Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Philipp Gotico et al.

Summary: The catalyst pioneered by Lehn for the two-electron reduction of CO2 has unique features in selective transformation. A novel ruthenium photosensitizer and rhenium catalyst dyad showed efficient charge accumulation under photo-induced conditions, although second electron accumulation was not observed in the experiment.

Efficient and reversible electron bifurcation with either normal or inverted potentials at the bifurcating cofactor

Jonathon L. Yuly et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that reversible and efficient electron bifurcation can occur at the bifurcating site even without inverted reduction potentials, as long as the absolute difference between the first and second reduction potentials of the bifurcating species is sufficiently large. Strong, normally ordered potentials at the bifurcating cofactor can be just as effective as strongly inverted potentials, challenging the existing understanding of electron bifurcation mechanisms in nature.
