Depositing Molecular Graphene Nanoribbons on Ag(111) by Electrospray Controlled Ion Beam Deposition: Self-Assembly and On-Surface Transformations

Wei Ran et al.

Summary: The atomically precise engineering of N-doped molecular graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is achieved by combining multistep solution synthesis and mass-selected ion beam deposition on surfaces. This method allows for the controllable production of single GNRs, which can be further processed using on-surface synthesis protocols.

Supramolecular Nanopatterns of Molecular Spoked Wheels with Orthogonal Pillars: The Observation of a Fullerene Haze

Georgiy Poluektov et al.

Summary: Molecular spoked wheels with intraannular functionalizable pillars are synthesized in a modular approach to form two-dimensional crystals on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite at the solid-liquid interface. The pillares were found to adopt equilibrium distances of 6.0 nm above the graphite substrate, with fullerene showing residual mobility. Molecular dynamics simulations support and rationalize the experimental results, showing the rigidly attached perylene monoimide units maintaining a minimum distance of 2 nm above the substrate. Additionally, cocrystals with molecular hexagons were found to expand pillar-pillar distances by 15% and block unspecific intercalation.

Chiral Self-sorting of Giant Cubic [8+12] Salicylimine Cage Compounds

Philippe Wagner et al.

Summary: Chiral self-sorting is intricately connected to natural chiral processes, with few purely organic molecules having controllable self-sorting processes observed. In this study, chiral self-sorting of large cubic [8+12] salicylimine cage compounds based on a chiral TBTQ precursor was successfully achieved, leading to the formation of enantiopure and meso cage isomers with controlled solvent choice. These cages are among the largest organic cage compounds characterized, exhibiting high specific surface areas up to approximately 1500 m(2) g(-1) after desolvation.

Spin splitting of dopant edge state in magnetic zigzag graphene nanoribbons

Raymond E. Blackwell et al.

Summary: Spin-ordered electronic states in hydrogen-terminated zigzag nanographene lead to magnetic quantum phenomena, sparking interest in carbon-based spintronics. Zigzag graphene nanoribbons have intrinsic electronic edge states that are ferromagnetically ordered along the edges and antiferromagnetically coupled across its width. By introducing substitutional N-atom dopants along the edges of a ZGNR, the spin-polarized edge states can be stabilized and electronically decoupled, revealing a giant spin splitting and confirming the emergence of magnetic order in ZGNRs.

Molecular functionalization of 2D materials: from atomically planar 2D architectures to off-plane 3D functional materials

Adam R. Brill et al.

Summary: In the past 15 years, atomically thin two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have advanced to a technological renaissance due to their unique electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Non-covalent functionalization allows the modification of 2DMs' properties by introducing auxiliary molecular functionalities without disrupting the lattice structure. Molecular photo-switches enable reversible modulation of the (opto)electronic properties of 2D materials through light-induced isomerization processes.
