Ternary platinum-cobalt-indium nanoalloy on ceria as a highly efficient catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane using CO2

Feilong Xing et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a highly efficient Pt-Co-In ternary nanoalloy catalyst on CeO2 for CO2 oxidative dehydrogenation of propane, which shows high catalytic activity, C3H6 selectivity, stability, and CO2 utilization efficiency. The combination of platinum, indium, and cobalt improves the selectivity and reduction ability of CO2, and the stability is enhanced by CO2 activation ability of the alloy and oxygen releasing ability of the CeO2 support.

General embedded cluster protocol for accurate modeling of oxygen vacancies in metal-oxides

Benjamin X. Shi et al.

Summary: In this work, a systematic and general quantum cluster design protocol is proposed to accurately compute the formation energy of oxygen vacancies in metal-oxides. The protocol is applied to rutile TiO2 and rock salt MgO, providing accurate and well-converged determinations of the formation energy. These results are used to benchmark exchange-correlation functionals in density functional theory.

Revisiting the Iodine Vacancy Surface Defects to Rationalize Passivation Strategies in Perovskite Solar Cells

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of surface iodine vacancies (V-I) on perovskite solar cells. The research finds that V-I in the outermost layer are benign, while those near the surface can be detrimental. Illumination promotes the diffusion of V-I from the outermost layer, making them harmful. The passivation of V-I in the second layer and outermost layer can improve the performance of solar cells.

New Insights into the Bulk and Surface Defect Structures of Ceria Nanocrystals from Neutron Scattering Study

Si Luo et al.

Summary: Neutron diffraction and pair distribution function studies, combined with Raman spectroscopy, have successfully revealed the detailed oxygen defect structures of ceria nanocubes and nanorods. The study found that ceria nanorods have a higher concentration of surface oxygen defects compared to nanocubes, with a slightly higher concentration of bulk Frenkel-type oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, annealing the nanorod sample at 600 degrees C under vacuum led to the observation of a partially reduced ceria phase with long-range oxygen vacancy ordering for the first time.

Development and Application of a ReaxFF Reactive Force Field for Cerium Oxide/Water Interfaces

Luca Brugnoli et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ce/O/H ReaxFF was parameterized for the study of ceria and ceria/water interfaces, reproducing well the fitted properties and investigating the coverage and dissociation mechanism of water on different surfaces. The simulations showed hydroxylation on CeO2 (111) surface and preferential dissociation of water on CeO2 (100) surface, in agreement with experimental findings.

Cerium Oxides without U: The Role of Many-Electron Correlation

Tobias Schaefer et al.

Summary: The article highlights the challenges in predicting electron transfer within the 4f subshell and introduces a novel approach based on ab initio many-electron theory for more accurate predictions of electron transfer energies and lattice parameters. This new method outperforms common density functional theory variations and allows for reliable assessment of strongly correlated materials and density functionals.

Facet-dependent stability of near-surface oxygen vacancies and excess charge localization at CeO2 surfaces

Patricia Perez-Bailac et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dependence of the relative stability of surface and subsurface oxygen vacancies in CeO2 on crystal facets. The results show that the preference of vacancies for surface or subsurface sites is facet- and concentration-dependent, with corresponding locations of Ce3+ polarons. The stability of vacancies on different facets is influenced by packing density, lattice relaxation effects, and localization of excess charge.

Interface dynamics of Pd-CeO2 single-atom catalysts during CO oxidation

Valery Muravev et al.

Summary: In this study, two Pd/CeO2 single-atom catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation were compared, revealing the impact of preparation method on their stability. Detailed in situ characterization linked the stability of the Pd single atoms to the properties of the Pd-CeO2 interface. Understanding such metal-support interactions is crucial for the rational design of stable single-atom catalysts.
