Evidence-based hormonal, mutational, and endocrine-disrupting chemical-induced zebrafish as an alternative model to study PCOS condition similar to mammalian PCOS model

Gokul Sudhakaran et al.

Summary: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a disease that affects women of reproductive age, characterized by swollen ovaries and small cysts on the outer edges due to hormonal disorder. The cause of PCOS is still unknown. Various factors contribute to the increased prevalence of PCOS, including hyperandrogenism, oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Zebrafish, as a non-mammalian model, has been developed to simulate the pathophysiology of PCOS in humans. Its transparency, small size, and rapid growth make it a versatile and useful model for PCOS drug testing and screening.

Lipid-Lowering and Antioxidant Activity of RF13 Peptide From Vacuolar Protein Sorting-Associated Protein 26B (VPS26B) by Modulating Lipid Metabolism and Oxidative Stress in HFD Induced Obesity in Zebrafish Larvae

Ajay Guru et al.

Summary: This study investigates the lipid-lowering and antioxidant effects of RF13 peptide derived from VPS26B in zebrafish larvae fed with a high fat diet (HFD). The results show that RF13 significantly reduces cholesterol and triglycerides levels, enhances antioxidant enzyme levels, and decreases lipid peroxidation and accumulation in zebrafish larvae. RF13 also regulates lipid metabolism and upregulates antioxidant-related genes.

Hydroxyl containing benzo[b]thiophene analogs mitigates the acrylamide induced oxidative stress in the zebrafish larvae by stabilizing the glutathione redox cycle

B. Haridevamuthu et al.

Summary: Compounds BP and EP exhibited strong in vitro free radical scavenging ability. The maximum tolerated concentration of the compounds in zebrafish larvae was 80 μM. The antioxidant system in zebrafish larvae was dysregulated due to acrylamide exposure, and improvement was observed when acrylamide-exposed larvae were treated with compounds BP and EP. These compounds enhanced SOD and CAT activity, reduced ROS and lipid peroxidation levels, and decreased cell death in zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, BP and EP stabilized glutathione-related gene expressions, thus improving the glutathione redox cycle.

Reverse pharmacology of Nimbin-N2 attenuates alcoholic liver injury and promotes the hepatoprotective dual role of improving lipid metabolism and downregulating the levels of inflammatory cytokines in zebrafish larval model

Gokul Sudhakaran et al.

Summary: Alcoholic liver disease is a common liver disease worldwide, characterized by lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the liver. This study explored the therapeutic potential of N2, a seminatural analog of Nimbin, in protecting against liver injury caused by ethanol exposure in zebrafish larvae. The results showed that N2 could decrease oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and inflammation in the liver, suggesting that it could be an effective therapeutic agent for alcoholic liver disease and other inflammatory conditions.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the RF13 peptide derived from VSP26B has potential anticancer properties. It inhibits the proliferation of HEp-2 cells and induces apoptosis, possibly through the arrest of cell cycle and upregulation of apoptotic gene expression. Further research is needed to understand the specific target mechanism and develop therapeutic approaches for this potential anticancer agent.
