Fluorescent probes for the detection of chemical warfare agents

Wen-Qi Meng et al.

Summary: Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are targeted toxic chemicals that pose serious threats to public health and global peace. Accurate detection methods for CWAs are essential for security measures. Small molecule fluorescent probes have emerged as attractive tools for CWA detection due to their simplicity, selectivity, and sensitivity, and their ability to be translated into handheld devices.

Highly efficient nerve agents fluorescent film probe based on organic/inorganic hybrid silica nanoparticles

Yimeng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, hybrid SiO2 nanoparticles functionalized with 1,8-naphthalimide-pyridine were successfully prepared and used as a fluorescent film probe for detecting nerve agent simulants. The probe showed highly selective fluorescence turn-on signals for nerve agent simulants and effectively discriminated false-positive interferences from mineral acids by their fluorescence turn-off response. This study demonstrates a novel platform for detecting various nerve agent simulants and provides an effective strategy for distinguishing between nerve agent simulants and acids.

A novel BODIPY-based fluorescent probe for sensitive and selective detection of nerve agent simulants through base-assisted photo-induced electron transfer process

Sheng-Song Li et al.

Summary: A fluorescent BODIPY probe was designed and synthesized for highly sensitive and selective detection of DCNP, showing significant fluorescence quenching in the presence of Et3N and a 30-fold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of DCNP. The fluorescence variations were attributed to intramolecular photo-induced electron transfer process, with a low limit of detection (34 nM) and rapid response (t1/2 = 175 s). Naked-eye detection of DCNP was also achieved in both liquid and vapor phases using test strips immobilized with the probe.

Indicator displacement assays (IDAs): the past, present and future

Adam C. Sedgwick et al.

Summary: Indicator displacement assays (IDAs) offer a unique and innovative approach to molecular sensing, with advantages including low cost, high sensitivity, and high-throughput automation analysis. IDAs can facilitate the detection of a range of biologically/environmentally important species, provide a method for the detection of complex analytes or for the determination and discrimination of unknown sample mixtures. The simplicity and versatility of IDAs have led to their widespread use in molecular sensing, alongside other common approaches such as reaction-based sensors and chemosensors.
