A self-healing PVDF-ZnO/MXene membrane with universal fouling resistance for real seawater desalination

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Seawater desalination is a possible solution to overcome freshwater shortages. The membrane-based air humidification-dehumidification desalination (MHDD) technique shows promise due to its high-quality freshwater and cost-effectiveness. A polyvinylidene fluoride-ZnO/MXene (PVDF-ZM) membrane with reversible superhydrophobicity and hydrophilicity was fabricated to achieve universal fouling resistance. The membrane demonstrated excellent performance with competitive permeate flux and high salt rejection. The PVDF-ZM membrane also exhibited strong anti-fouling abilities, benefiting from its superhydrophobicity and rough surface. Under UV irradiation, the membrane's surface wettability could be transformed from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic, allowing the desorption of hydrophobic contaminants. In dark conditions, the membrane returned to its hydrophobic state. The membrane showed a 90% recovery of original permeation flux and maintained a high salt rejection rate, realizing self-healing. The PVDF-ZM membrane holds promise for sustainable desalination applications.
