Recent trends in the use of FTIR spectroscopy integrated with chemometrics for the detection of edible oil adulteration

Rahul Jamwal et al.

Summary: Edible oils are important in daily life for cooking and as ingredients, but adulteration incidents have increased due to high demand. Traditional analytical methods are time-consuming and lack online monitoring, while FTIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics provides a rapid and accurate solution for detecting different adulterants in edible oils. This review highlights the critical findings and recent studies on the application of FTIR spectroscopy integrated with chemometric tools for adulteration detection in edible oils.

Authentication of edible oils using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and pattern recognition methods

Isio Sota-Uba et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the FTIR spectra of ninety-seven samples from twenty plant-based edible oil varieties and found that edible oils from different groups could be reliably discriminated, while discrimination within the same group was problematic. FTIR spectroscopy could reliably detect adulteration by oils from different groups but had difficulty with detecting adulteration of oils within the same group.

The employment of analytical techniques and chemometrics for authentication of fish oils: A review

Abdul Rohman et al.

Summary: Fish oils are valuable sources of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, but they are often subjected to mislabeling or adulteration with lower priced oils. This review explores the scientific view of analytical methods such as molecular spectroscopy and chromatography with chemometrics for authenticating fish oils. Various methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and chromatographic techniques, are effective for detecting adulteration and assisting regulators and producers in choosing appropriate methods.

Physicochemical parameters prediction and authentication of different monofloral honeys based on FTIR spectra

Daniela Pauliuc et al.

Summary: Different types of honey samples were identified as monofloral honey using destructive and nondestructive methods. PCA, LDA, and PLS-R could differentiate mint, rape, acacia, tilia, and sunflower honeys, while FTIR spectroscopy successfully predicted physicochemical parameters. This study highlights the potential of FTIR in confirming honey authenticity and assessing its quality.
