Summary: Interaction of rare earth bearing (La, Nd, Dy) aqueous solutions with calcite crystals can result in solvent-mediated surface precipitation of rare earth carbonates and subsequent mineral replacement. The specific rare earth and temperature play a strong role in polymorph selection, crystallization pathways, and kinetics of mineral replacement. The epitaxial growth of kozoite-(La, Nd) on calcite surfaces is dependent on the ionic radius of the rare earth in its structure.
