Eoarchean to Neoarchean crustal evolution of the Western Dharwar Craton, southern India: Clues from U-Pb-Hf isotope composition of detrital zircon

Sameer Ranjan et al.

Summary: This study utilized the U-Pb-Hf isotope composition of detrital zircon to investigate the geological history and rock formation in the Western Dharwar Craton. The analysis revealed different periods of crust formation and extraction, as well as detrital zircon with both radiogenic and crust-like Hf isotopic compositions.

U-Pb zircon age, geochemistry and petrogenesis of Mesoarchean anorthositic rocks from the Holenarsipur Greenstone Belt, Western Dharwar Craton: Implications for accretionary tectonics in southern India

Arathi G. Panicker et al.

Summary: The Doddakadanur Anorthosite Complex in the Western Dharwar Craton of southern India is a well-preserved sequence of anorthosites and related rocks intruded into amphibolites. The rocks have undergone metamorphism and preserve igneous cumulus textures, with peak P-T conditions estimated at 650-700 degrees C and 7-11 kbar. The geochemistry and ages of these rocks suggest enrichment by subduction-derived fluids and reveal a convergent margin tectonic setting for the complex.

Paleo-Mesoarchean crustal growth and reworking in the western Dharwar Craton, southwestern India: Evidence from trondhjemitic gneiss and granitic gneiss

Wenhao Ao et al.

Summary: The study of Paleo-Mesoarchean felsic orthogneisses in the southern part of the western Dharwar Craton in southern India reveals two distinct groups: the 3.4-3.3 Ga trondhjemitic gneiss and the similar to 3.1-3.0 Ga granitic gneiss. The trondhjemitic gneiss shows characteristics of partial melting of juvenile mafic crust, while the granitic gneiss is likely derived from pre-existing crustal rocks. This suggests significant crustal growth and reworking events during the early Mesoarchean period in this region.

Archean continental crust formed by magma hybridization and voluminous partial melting

Juan David Hernandez-Montenegro et al.

Summary: Archean TTG terranes represent fragments of Earth's first continents formed through high-grade metamorphism and partial melting, but the processes by which TTG magmas separated from their source and acquired distinct geochemical signatures are uncertain. Petrological modeling shows that hydrous Archean mafic crust metamorphism produces similar but not always matching pulses of magma resembling natural Archean TTGs. Most Archean continental crust is believed to be composed of hybrid magmas formed along thermal gradients characteristic of overthickened mafic Archean crust.

Summary: Research on TTG suites reveals complex petrogenetic processes, predominantly derived from melting of garnet-rich protoliths at multiple depths. Data indicate that the Hf isotopic compositions of TTG rocks and their zircons are associated with late-stage fractional melting processes.
