This article introduces the advantages and problems of ZABs, and systematically reviews and evaluates various anti-CO2 strategies for liquid and flexible ZABs. It also provides current challenges and perspectives for future development.
Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising candidates for post-lithium-ion battery technology owing to their safe, low-cost, and eco-friendly nature. However, ZABs suffer from CO2 corrosion, which leads to quick battery deterioration and severely limits their applications. Here, we explain the reason behind ZAB failure by CO2 corrosion and systematically review various anti-CO2 strategies for liquid and flexible ZABs. Recent advances are highlighted, and the effectiveness of these strategies in extending battery lifetime is evaluated. Current challenges and perspectives for the future development of anti-CO2 ZABs are also provided. We believe this review will deliver a comprehensive sight for anti-CO2 ZABs.
