Dual-Stage Atmospheric Water Harvesting Device for Scalable Solar-Driven Water Production

Alina LaPotin et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that a dual-stage AWH device with optimized design can achieve higher daily water productivity by recovering the latent heat of condensation and maintaining the required temperature difference between stages, without the need for additional heating units. Outdoor experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the dual-stage water harvesting device.

Novel reverse osmosis membranes incorporated with Co-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) with enhanced performance for brackish water desalination

Yuvaraj Mutharasi et al.

Summary: For the first time, thin film nanocomposite membranes incorporated with CoeAl LDH via interfacial polymerization have been explored for desalination of brackish water. The modified membranes showed increased hydrophilicity and excellent NaCl rejection with good water flux. LDH particles can enhance membrane surface structure and water transport channels, suggesting potential for designing next generation RO membranes.

Fate and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in reclaimed water production processes

Yuan Meng et al.

Summary: Reclaimed water is widely used in irrigation and industrial production, and understanding the behavior of emerging contaminants in the production process is crucial for setting water quality standards. A study in Beijing investigated 43 emerging contaminants in reclaimed water treatment plants, with pharmaceuticals and personal care products being the dominant pollutants. The study found that antibiotic resistance genes and organophosphorus flame retardants were challenging to remove, while tertiary treatment processes performed better in contaminant removal compared to secondary processes.

Mussel-inspired photothermal synergetic system for clean water production using full-spectrum solar energy

Ruofei Zhu et al.

Summary: Utilizing a functional photothermal-photocatalysis system inspired by mussel chemistry, researchers have developed a superhydrophilic composite material (CuO@PDA/PB) for full-spectrum solar energy absorption and efficient water evaporation. The superhydrophilic CuO@PDA/PB demonstrated higher evaporation rate and efficiency compared to other samples under 1.0 sun, providing a cost-effective platform for seawater desalination and sewage purification.

Membrane distillation process application using a novel ceramic membrane for Brackish water desalination

Khaled Bin Bandar et al.

Summary: In this study, a ceramic membrane for membrane distillation was fabricated using Saudi red clay, tetraethyl orthosilicate, ammonia, and sodium alginate powder, showing promising results in terms of permeate flux and salt rejection in VMD tests. The membrane exhibited stable performance for 4 hours in continuous well water desalination tests, with a 16.5% decrease in flux after 10 hours which was recovered by a known cleaning procedure.

Future global urban water scarcity and potential solutions

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: Urbanization and climate change are exacerbating global urban water scarcity, with the number of people affected projected to increase significantly by 2050, particularly in countries like India. Large cities and megacities will be most severely affected, and while infrastructure investment can help alleviate water scarcity, potential environmental trade-offs must be carefully considered.
