Effects of long-term perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure on activated sludge performance, composition, and its microbial community

Bianhe Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) on the performance and microbial community of activated sludge. The results showed that the presence of PFOS reduced the removal efficiency of total nitrogen and improved the removal efficiency of total phosphorus, while also leading to the deterioration of activated sludge's dewatering performance.

Hormesis-Like Effects of Tetrabromobisphenol A on Anaerobic Digestion: Responses of Metabolic Activity and Microbial Community

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: TBBPA exhibits hormesis-like effects on anaerobic digestion, affecting methane production. It binds with proteins in the extracellular polymeric substances of anaerobes and induces an increase in reactive oxygen species. Different anaerobes show varied tolerance to TBBPA.

Effect of different forms and components of EPS on sludge aggregation during granulation process of aerobic granular sludge

Ting Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of three forms of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and their component proteins (PN) and polysaccharides (PS) during the granulation process of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and their effects on the aggregation performance of AGS. The results showed that tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) played a critical role in the formation of AGS, with PN being the major contributor to promoting the formation of AGS and enhancing its aggregation performance.

Toxicity of perfluooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) to Scenedesmus obliquus: Photosynthetic characteristics, oxidative damage and transcriptome analysis

Xingyan Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aquatic toxicity of PFBS and PFOS on freshwater algae. The results showed that PFBS had lower toxicity on the algae compared to PFOS. PFOS exposure led to ROS accumulation and oxidative damage to the algae, resulting in inhibition of growth and photosynthesis.

Organic contaminants of emerging concern in leachate of historic municipal landfills

Victoria R. Propp et al.

Summary: The study found various CECs in leachate of historic landfills, with some landfills having PFAS concentrations similar to modern landfills and elevated levels of certain substances increasing with landfill age, indicating historic landfills may be long-term sources of CECs to groundwater.

How Does Chitosan Affect Methane Production in Anaerobic Digestion?

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that chitosan in sewage sludge anaerobic digestion could inhibit methane production by restricting the transfer of organic substrates and reducing microbial activities. Chitosan also suppressed the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances and increased mass transfer resistance, leading to a lower metabolic rate of anaerobes.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate decreases the performance of a sequencing batch reactor system and changes the sludge microbial community

Jing Ji et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in the SBR processing system, PFOS is mainly removed through adsorption, significantly impacting the removal rates of COD and ammonia nitrogen, leading to a decrease in microbial richness and diversity, which in turn reduces the system's efficiency in removing COD and ammonia nitrogen.

A review of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) treating recalcitrant wastewater: Refractory organics removal mechanism, application and prospect

Fangrui Cai et al.

Summary: In recent years, the innovative biotechnology aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has shown significant potential in effectively treating recalcitrant wastewater due to its high biomass retention, resistance to toxicity, and layered structure. This review analyzes the structure of AGS and its applications in treating recalcitrant industrial effluents, highlighting the potential for biodegradation of refractory organics. Combining AGS with chemical pre-treatments or membrane bioreactors may offer economically feasible and promising alternatives for wastewater treatment.

Response of anammox bacteria to short-term exposure of 1,4-dioxane: Bacterial activity and community dynamics

Sherif Ismail et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of 1,4-dioxane contamination on the anammox process, finding that its effects were substrate-dependent and became more pronounced at concentrations exceeding 200 mg/L. The inhibition mechanism was attributed to the inactivation of the HDH enzyme, leading to reduced SAA and EPS secretion, ultimately affecting TN removal efficiency.
