Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in African water systems: A need for timely intervention

Charles Obinwanne Okoye et al.

Summary: The occurrence of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), and pesticides in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about their negative effects on aquatic species and humans. PPCPs and pesticides, due to their toxicity and bioactive nature, have a higher potential to harm water systems compared to other contaminants. Limited data exists on remediation and control strategies for PPCPs and pesticides in African water systems, highlighting the need for adequate intervention strategies.

Impact of eight widely consumed antibiotics on the growth and physiological profile of natural soil microbial communities

Maria Rosa Pino-Otin et al.

Summary: The occurrence of antibiotics in soil ecosystems has a significant impact on the structure and functionality of soil microbial communities, particularly due to their combination with manure and biosolids. This study evaluated the effects of eight commonly used antibiotics on a natural soil microbial community using gene sequencing and physiological profiling. The results showed that these antibiotics significantly decreased the growth of soil microbial communities and adversely affected their physiological profiles. Each antibiotic was influenced by different physico-chemical parameters, even within the same family. Significant effects were observed at concentrations found in digested sludge, biosolids, and fertilized soils, indicating the potential cumulative and long-term effects of these antibiotics on the soil environment.

UV/chlorine advanced oxidation processes for degradation of contaminants in water and wastewater: A comprehensive review

Golnoosh Khajouei et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including UV/chlorine, have gained attention as alternatives to conventional water treatment technologies. UV/chlorine process offers multiple disinfection modes and maintains chlorine residuals, while also having advantages like higher radical production efficiency. This process has been applied to degrade a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. This review evaluates the efficiency of UV/chlorine process and discusses strategies to tackle the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs).
