UV/Chlorine Process: An Efficient Advanced Oxidation Process with Multiple Radicals and Functions in Water Treatment

Kaiheng Guo et al.

Summary: Due to the worsened global water quality, the presence of chemical and microbial contaminants in water raises serious concerns for human health. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and develop effective and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies to obtain clean water. This article focuses on the radical chemistry of UV/chlorine, an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), and its role in the abatement of contaminants.

Mechanistic insight into the degradation of ibuprofen in UV/H2O2 process via a combined experimental and DFT study

Pin Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation kinetics and transformation mechanism of ibuprofen (IBP) in the UV/H2O2 process, evaluating the impacts of various factors on the degradation process. The (OH)-O· and (NO2)-N· were found to play important roles in the degradation of IBP, with their rate constants calculated based on transition state theory. The detailed degradation pathways for IBP, including hydroxylated and keto-based products, were clarified through ultra-high-resolution mass and density functional theory calculations.

Mechanism and kinetics of ClO0.7?-mediated degradation of aromatic compounds in aqueous solution: DFT and QSAR studies

Mingxue Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation mechanism and kinetics of 43 aromatic compounds by ClO?, showing that radical adduct formation was prominent in ClO?-initiated reactions. ClO? was highly reactive to phenolates, anilines and alkoxy/hydroxyl aromatic compounds. QSARs models were developed to predict the reactivity of ClO? to complex aromatic compounds in aquatic systems.

Solar photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen with a magnetic catalyst: Effects of parameters, efficiency in effluent, mechanism and toxicity evolution

Han Gong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) in different water types using an environmental-friendly photocatalytic process with a magnetic catalyst CoFe2O4/TiO2 mediated by solar light. Results showed that hydroxyl radicals and photo-holes contributed to IBP decay, with different anions showing varying effects on the degradation process. Addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) significantly enhanced removal efficiency, while the introduction of hydrogen peroxide slowed down the reaction. Thirteen transformation products were identified, with five of them being newly reported.

Enhanced Radical Generation in an Ultraviolet/Chlorine System through the Addition of TiO2

Hao-Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: It was found that TiO2 can significantly promote the degradation of DMP in the UV/chlorine system, with hydroxyl radicals and chlorine radicals being the main reactive species. The concentrations of HO center dot and Cl-center dot in the UV/chlorine/TiO2 system were several times to dozens of times higher than that in UV/chlorine, and their contributions to DMP degradation were 70.3% and 29.7%, respectively.

Modeling degradation kinetics of gemfibrozil and naproxen in the UV/chlorine system: Roles of reactive species and effects of water matrix

Huaying Liu et al.

Summary: This study quantified the specific roles of radical species in the UV/chlorine oxidation degradation of gemfibrozil and naproxen. The results showed that primary reactive species and secondary species dominated the degradation in pure water, while Cl2·- and ClO· contributed significantly to the enhanced degradation in the presence of Cl-. The presence of HCO3- facilitated degradation, while dissolved organic matter inhibited the process. The constructed model successfully predicted the oxidation degradation kinetics in real waters, with center dot OH and CO3·- as the predominant reactive species.

Near-Ultraviolet Light-Driven Photocatalytic Chlorine Activation Process with Novel Chlorine Activation Mechanisms

Zihang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significant enhancement in carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation in the UV365/TiO2/chlorine process, where chlorine plays a dual role in catalyzing the production of hydroxyl radicals and reactive chlorine species. The use of chlorine in this process enables rapid CBZ degradation at significantly lower dosages compared to conventional methods, providing a more energy-efficient and effective approach for micropollutant removal.
