Combination of nitrate and sodium nitroprusside dosing for sulfide control with low carbon source loss in sewer biofilm reactors

Guijiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The combination of nitrate and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was found to be highly synergistic for sulfide control in sewer systems, reducing chemical costs by approximately 35% and minimizing loss of organic carbon source. Nitrate combined with SNP could effectively promote the activity of autotrophic, nitrate reducing-sulfide oxidizing bacteria while reducing the abundance of heterotrophic, nitrate-reducing bacteria. This strategy also promoted the dissimilatory nitrate reduction process, utilizing sulfide as an effective electron donor.

Simultaneous control of sulfide and methane in sewers achieved by a physical approach targeting dominant active zone in sediments

Daheng Ren et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel physical control approach called intermittent surface sediment flushing to address multiple issues caused by sewer sediments. The results show that flushing the surface sediments immediately reduces sulfide and methane production, and it takes about a week for the activities to recover to 50% of the maximum. Compared to chemical dosing methods, this approach greatly reduces operating costs and environmental impact.

Stress responses of sulfate-reducing bacteria sludge upon exposure to polyethylene microplastics

Mei Tang et al.

Summary: The stress responses of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) sludge to polyethylene (PE) microplastic exposure were studied. Low levels of PE microplastics had limited effect on SRB consortia, whereas higher levels imposed physiological stresses. However, the overall reactor performance was less affected. Additionally, SRB consortia promoted the production of extracellular polymeric substances in response to higher concentrations of PE microplastics, providing protective effects.

Enhancing Methane Production from Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge through a Novel Sodium Percarbonate (SPC) Pretreatment: Reaction Kinetics and Mechanisms

Yufen Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of sodium percarbonate (SPC) pretreatment on improving the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). The results show that SPC pretreatment can significantly enhance methane production in WAS. Mechanistic studies reveal that SPC pretreatment accelerates sludge solubilization by breaking down extracellular polymeric substances and cell walls of WAS, thus improving its biodegradability. Additionally, SPC pretreatment improves hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis bioprocesses of WAS and enriches key microbes involved in complex organic decomposition and methane conversion.

Perturbation of clopyralid on bio-denitrification and nitrite accumulation: Long-term performance and biological mechanism

Suyun Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential threat of the herbicide clopyralid (CLP) to ecological systems and its impact on the bio-denitrification process. The results show that low concentrations of CLP cause nitrite accumulation initially, while higher concentrations have no further effect after long-term exposure. Mechanistically, CLP reduces nitrite reductase activity and inhibits metabolic activity through oxidative stress and membrane damage, resulting in nitrite accumulation. However, after prolonged acclimation, nitrite accumulation is significantly reduced, possibly due to increased secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that protect microbial cells and improve nitrite reductase activity and metabolic activities. The study also highlights the changes in microbial community biodiversity and richness, with certain microbial species playing a role in protecting against toxic substances and regulating interactions among microorganisms.

Acceleration mechanism of bioavailable Fe(III) on Te(IV) bioreduction of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1: Promotion of electron generation, electron transfer and energy level

Yue He et al.

Summary: The addition of Fe(III) increased the bioreduction rate of Te(IV) and enhanced NADH production, cytochrome c levels, and extracellular polymeric substances secretion while reducing cell membrane permeability, subsequently reducing the toxicity of Te(IV) to cells. Additionally, Fe(III) also facilitated ATP production, providing energy for the metabolic process of Te(IV) bioreduction and playing a crucial role in cell activity. Zeta potential and FT-IR spectra indicated that the stability of TeNPs was improved by the presence of EPS, offering a promising strategy for enhancing the stability of TeNPs.

Identification of CO2 induces oxidative stress to change bacterial surface properties

Xiaoxiao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 on the surface properties of Paracoccus denitrificans, a model bacterium. The results showed that increased CO2 concentrations led to higher hydrophilicity and negative surface charge on the bacterial surface. This was attributed to elevated production of polysaccharides in EPS caused by CO2, as well as the accumulation of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that damaged bacterial membranes, ultimately increasing EPS polysaccharides.

Different Pathways of Microplastics Entering the Sludge Treatment System Distinctively Affect Anaerobic Sludge Fermentation Processes

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study showed that different pathways of microplastics entering the sludge treatment system had varying impacts on anaerobic sludge fermentation processes. Direct dosing of four typical microplastics into a WAS anaerobic fermenter significantly inhibited SCFA production, while their initial entry into the biological wastewater treatment reactor had little influence. Excessive oxidative stress and toxic leachates from microplastics reduced the abundance of key anaerobic bacteria involved in the fermentation process.

Ionic copper strengthens the toxicity of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) to denitrification by decreasing substrate transport and electron transfer

Rui Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effect of TBBPA and Cu on model denitrifying bacteria, finding that Cu intensified the toxicity of TBBPA to denitrification by stimulating EPS secretion, blocking glucose transport, suppressing key enzyme activity, and down-regulating gene expression related to electron transport. These effects led to decreased bacterial growth, insufficient electron donor, and lower electron transport activity, causing a synergistic toxic effect of TBBPA and Cu on denitrification. Overall, this study provides new insights into the combined impact of BFRs and HMs on microorganisms.

Diversion of food waste into the sulfate-laden sewer: Interaction and electron flow of sulfidogenesis and methanogenesis

Feixiang Zan et al.

Summary: This study revealed that diverting food waste into sulfate-laden sewer can significantly influence the production of methane and sulfide in sewers. The addition of food waste was found to enhance both sulfide and methane production, but the impact on methane production was more significant than on sulfide production. Sulfate concentration and food waste-to-sewage ratios were found to play a crucial role in microbial electron utilization for sulfide and methane production. These findings suggest that diverting food waste into sulfate-laden sewer may have negative impacts on sewer management and the environment.
