Yedong Gao et al.

Summary: A novel bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR) was investigated for efficient treatment of mariculture wastewater. The BACR integrated acidogenic fermentation and microalgae cultivation, and successfully alleviated the pH drop and feedback inhibition of fermentation. The BACR achieved effective removal of pollutants and enrichment of fermentative bacteria and functional genes, leading to enhanced fatty acid production. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated the coordination between fermentative bacteria and microalgae in the BACR.

Shock effects of monovalent cationic salts on seawater cultivated granular sludge

Raghavendran Sivasubramanian et al.

Summary: Transitioning seed sludge from seawater to industrial salt solutions resulted in granule disaggregation, poor settling, sludge washout, and development of fluffy or slimy flocs. The predominant reason for these changes was the alteration in exopolysaccharides composition after the shift to single salt media.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of SMX and the response of microbial communities to different initial concentrations of SMX in MFCs. It was found that the highest SMX removal efficiency was achieved at 5 mg/L, while high concentration of SMX inhibited electron transfer. The 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing revealed significant shifts in anode biofilm communities with different initial SMX concentrations in MFCs.
