Nanoparticle de-agglomeration in viscous fluids using different high shear mixer geometries

Vikash Vashisth et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of batch high shear mixer (HSM) geometries on nanoparticles deagglomeration and power draw in water and aqueous glycerol solutions. It found that the mesh head geometry is more efficient in generating fines compared to the disintegrated head. Bi-modal particle size distribution was observed, with erosion as the dominant break-up mechanism. Power draw increased with viscosity, continuous media viscosity, and rotor speed.

Effects of rotor and stator geometry on dissolution process and power consumption in jet-flow high shear mixers

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: The study shows that by adjusting the configuration of the rotor blade inclination and stator bottom opening of the JF-HSM, the solid-liquid mass transfer rate can be significantly increased to enhance mixing efficiency. These results provide dimensionless correlations to guide the design and selection of such new equipment.

Investigation of gas-liquid mass transfer and power consumption characteristics in jet-flow high shear mixers

Yudong Liu et al.

Summary: Experimental measurements were conducted to investigate the effects of operating conditions and structural configurations of the rotor-stator head on gas-liquid characteristics and power consumption of the jet-flow high shear mixer (HSM). The results showed that gas-liquid mass transfer performance and power consumption were significantly influenced by structural parameters and increasing gas flow rate or reducing surface tension could enhance mass transfer performance. Dimensionless correlations were established based on the experimental data to predict Pog and kLa, providing useful guidance for scaleup design and optimization of the jet-flow HSM.

Design and development of high shear mixers: Fundamentals, applications and recent progress

Summary: HSMs, as important devices, are widely used in industrial production processes such as dispersion of nanoparticles, emulsification, and mixing. The geometry of the stator has a significant impact on the uniform size distribution and energy dissipation in HSMs. Despite extensive research on hydrodynamics and mixing in HSMs, there is still a lack of specific scale-up/down criteria available.

Liquid-Liquid Dispersion and Selectivity of Chemical Reactions in the Inline Teethed High Shear Mixers

Bingyan Ai et al.

Summary: The study focused on the effects of various structural and operating parameters on liquid-liquid dispersion and selectivity of chemical reactions in inline single-row teethed high shear mixers. Results showed that increasing rotor speed and flow rate initially decreased X-s significantly, then slightly increased it. Structural parameters of the rotors were found to play a crucial role in enhancing mass transfer efficiency, with increasing rotor teeth number having the most significant impact on decreasing X-s and drop size. Computational fluid dynamics were used to predict flow and power characteristics, and a dimensionless correlation for X-s was established for design and optimization references.

Effect of structural parameters on the flow field and power consumption of in-line high shear mixer

Cholu Kwon et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the stator tooth thickness and tooth tip-base distance have a slight effect on the flow field, while the shear gap width is a key parameter affecting the flow field. As the structural parameters increase, the power number decreases, and there is a linear relationship between the constant k1 and the structural parameters.
