Mechanically Strong, Scalable, Mesoporous Xerogels of Nanocellulose Featuring Light Permeability, Thermal Insulation, and Flame Self-Extinction

Wataru Sakuma et al.

Summary: Scalability is a challenge in the drying of nanoscale particle dispersions for producing aerogels. Evaporative drying under ambient pressure is proposed as a solution, but challenges remain in producing xerogels with specific structural profiles like aerogels. This study demonstrates the production of mesoporous xerogels with high porosity and high specific surface area using cellulose nanofibers, showing outstanding strength and multifunctionality.

TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers-based heterogenous membrane employed for concentration-gradient-driven energy harvesting

Yanglei Xu et al.

Summary: The development and utilization of renewable clean energy has become a common way out for the world to solve energy crisis. The concentration gradient between sea water and river water is widely regarded as a very significant sustainable energy resource, and the rapid technical breakthrough of membrane engineering is necessary to capture this energy existing in the fluidic system. The nanofluidic device developed in this study shows great promise for energy harvesting.

Biodegradable and re-usable sponge materials made from chitin for efficient removal of microplastics

Cuizhu Sun et al.

Summary: This study developed chitin based sponges with excellent removal efficiency for different functionalized microplastics, reaching up to 71.6-92.1% at an environmentally relevant concentration. The sponges showed good biocompatibility and reusability, providing a promising method for environmentally friendly adsorbents for small-size microplastics removal.
