Adaptability of organic matter and solid content to Fe2+/persulfate and skeleton builder conditioner for waste activated sludge dewatering

Xiaoran Li et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of a composite conditioner, Fe2+/SPS combined with phosphogypsum, on sludges with varying organic and solid contents. Results showed that oxidation played a major role in conditioning, especially for higher organic matter content. Changes in phosphogypsum significantly affected the optimal molar ratio and dosage of Fe2+/SPS, with sludge containing more solids requiring higher Fe2+/SPS dosage for stronger oxidation.

The altered effects of chloride on the treatment efficiency of SO4•--based AOPs by other background water constituents

Yuzhen Zheng et al.

Summary: A significant loss of treatment efficiency is observed in SO4 center dot--based AOPs due to the presence of Cl-. Mathematical models for predicting treatment efficiency at different Cl- levels have been established, but the presence of background water constituents complicates the chemistry and renders these models ineffective. The distribution of reactive species shifts from SO4 center dot- to Cl-2(center dot)-, ClO center dot, and HOCl when Cl- is dosed, leading to decreased degradation of pollutants. Ammonia reacts with in situ formed HOCl rapidly in the Cl-/SO4 center dot- process, generating chloramine which serves as a radical scavenger rather than an oxidant, resulting in more severe efficiency loss in the presence of ammonia and Cl-. Surprisingly, the efficiency loss is alleviated by the addition of DOM, attributed to the suppression of chloramine formation. The occurrence of chlorate and disinfection by-products is not a concern when Cl- coexists with ammonia and DOM, due to decreased generation of HOCl.

Summary: The degradation of Triclosan (TCS) in soil and groundwater by Fe2+ activated persulfate (Fe2+/PS) oxidation process was studied in this research. The study found that TCS was readily degraded in soil by Fe2+/PS oxidation system, with various reactive substances involved in the degradation mechanism. The presence of certain ions in the solution may promote or inhibit the degradation process. Additionally, the Fe2+/PS oxidation process may impact the soil physicochemical properties and microbial community structure.

Contrasting hydrogen peroxide- and persulfate-driven oxidation systems: Impact of radical scavenging on treatment efficiency and cost

Klara Rusevova Crincoli et al.

Summary: For the first time, the fate of radicals in heterogeneous chemical oxidation treatment systems was studied, with UV-AHP and UV-APS generating center dot OH and SO4 center dot- radicals that impact treatment efficiency. The higher scavenging rates of center dot OH by alumina and aqueous/solid phase constituents, compared to SO4 center dot-, contributed to lower treatment efficiency in the UV-AHP system. The cost assessment based on overall treatment efficiency showed higher specific cost for treating the probe compound with UV-AHP due to its lower treatment efficiency compared to UV-APS.

Summary: The study presents a carbonaceous catalyst with N-coordinated Co (Co-NG) prepared using a mixture of Co phthalocyanine and melamine as precursor for PMS activation. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity and stability for the degradation of various organic pollutants, with sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) identified as the main reactive species. Reactions parameters including solution pH, inorganic anions, and natural organic matters were also evaluated, providing insights for designing efficient Co-based carbonaceous catalysts with high Co stability for water treatment applications.

Deciphering the impacts of composition of extracellular polymeric substances on sludge dewaterability: An often overlooked role of amino acids

Keke Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that glycine, serine, and threonine are key amino acids correlated with parameters related to sludge dewaterability. Adding these amino acids to sludge samples deteriorated sludge dewaterability due to high repulsive hydrophilic interaction. The presence of these amino acids led to a predominance of Lewis acid-base interaction among sludge flocs.
