Structure, synthesis, properties and solid oxide electrolysis cells application of Ba(Ce, Zr)O3 based proton conducting materials

Junmeng Jing et al.

Summary: Ba(Ce, Zr)O3 based proton-conducting oxides have attracted attention for their potential applications in H+-SOECs, showing lower activation energy and higher proton transfer properties compared to oxygen ion conductor perovskite oxides. Current research focuses on modification strategies, such as enhancing conductivity and chemical stability through the substitution of the B-site element, to improve the performance of H+-SOECs. Further attention should be given to current leakage, performance, and long-term stability of H+-SOECs in future studies.

Proton uptake kinetics and electromotive force in BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1O3-δ cathode material with e-/O2-/H+ three mobile carriers for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Piaopiao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the proton uptake kinetics and electromotive force of BCFZY material were investigated using the electrical conductivity relaxation method, with a focus on the hydrogenation reaction as the predominant proton uptake process. The deviation in proton uptake kinetics influenced by oxygen partial pressure and water pressure was analyzed, and the electromotive force induced by changes in water partial pressure was calculated based on the Nernst equation. The research also discussed the implications of electron/oxygen ion/proton triple conductor materials for application in PCFCs.

Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Activity and Cr Tolerance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathodes by a Multiphase Catalyst Coating

Yinghua Niu et al.

Summary: Intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) face challenges due to the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and cathode degradation. A highly efficient multiphase catalyst coating significantly enhances the ORR activity and durability. Experimental results show improved peak power density and increased durability against Cr and H2O. Both the BCFN phase and BaCO3 phase contribute to the improved performance of the LSCF cathode.

Tailoring electronic structure of perovskite cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells with high performance

Xi Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that tailoring the electronic structure of perovskite oxide with Mo-doping leads to improvements in cathode materials for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells. The Mo-doping changes the electronic structure of the oxide, making the metal-oxygen bond less strong and the surface more active towards oxygen reduction, resulting in more feasible oxygen vacancy formation critical for protonation. The electric field induced by Mo-doping provides an additional driving force for proton movement, accelerating proton migration in the oxide and improving cathode performance.

Summary: This study demonstrates an approach to achieving full thermo-mechanical compatibility between the cathode and other cell components for solid oxide fuel cells. By introducing a thermal-expansion offset and using reactive sintering to form a composite electrode, the research shows high activity and excellent stability of the electrode. The introduction of reactive negative-thermal-expansion components may provide a general strategy for developing fully compatible and highly active electrodes for SOFCs.

Summary: Triple conducting oxides (TCOs) have shown great potential in energy conversion and storage applications, and understanding their proton movement remains a challenge. This study utilized the isotope exchange diffusion profile method to evaluate proton kinetic properties in the layered perovskite-type TCO PBSCF, revealing significantly higher proton diffusion coefficient compared to oxygen at elevated temperatures. The research provides an innovative way to quantify proton kinetic properties in TCOs, which is crucial for understanding their electrochemical behavior and electrode reaction mechanisms.
