Enhanced redox activity and oxygen vacancies of perovskite triggered by copper incorporation for the improvement of electro-Fenton activity

Liangbo Xie et al.

Summary: ABO3 perovskite oxides doped with cation substitutions have been shown to alter the electronic and structural properties of perovskites. In this study, Cu was incorporated into LaCoO3 perovskite to act as a heterogeneous EF catalyst for the almost complete removal of the target pollutant ciprofloxacin within 120 minutes. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of Cu improved EF activity by enhancing redox activity and oxygen vacancies of LaCoxCu1_xO3_delta, leading to the activation of hydrogen peroxide and increased production of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide free radicals. Additionally, the degradation mechanism of LaCoxCu1_xO3_delta was investigated, highlighting the important role of cation substitutions in perovskite oxides for improving heterogeneous EF activity.
